Oh sure, Twilight would be curious about the alicorn stuff, perhaps enough to find the same forbidden book Sunset found that revealed the truth about the process and the mirror but…
<-<…….>_>…..
…that storyline might veer less into AU Twilight rushing into becoming an Alicorn, and more about the secret behind the method themselves shocking her to her core and making her wonder if this should be known to everyone.
You know what I’m talking about.
Even disregarding the Sunset prequel comic, remember the 30 seconds in EG1 where Sunset asks Twilight if Twilight was informed of the secret connection between Celestia, the mirror and the elements, and the power the process bequeath?
The scene that hinted that Celestia was keeping a secret she would never give Twilight….that Sunset was chasing after the same process Celestia had that made her both an Alicorn and made her and Luna worthy of the elements….
Y’know, the one that hinted that Celestia and Luna may have Pevensei’d themselves into Equestria and thats why they are alicorns.
Heh, that one line villain Sunset gave Twilight, and Celestia and Luna’s entire backstory, was NEVER touched upon in real canon material, just supplemental stuff that avoided many details intentionally.
…..
Back on track the the AU stuff, the only scenario I can see where AU Twilight would become a nightmare would be 1) the implications of the secret Twilight discovered were so great, perhaps partially shattering her image of Celestia, that exploring the mirror and its connection to Celestia superceded everything, and 2) If events happened similar to EG1 and EG3 but they occur at the same time, AU Pony Twilight is a mostly neutral recluse that has been using her high school years to obsessively study magitech and dimensional travel in the human world, and things spiral put of control when Twilight meets the Sunset and the newly recruited Humane 5.
Edited
you may have a few points there and well in an AU, some things will easily play out differently then what we know of normally, besides each alternate universe practically never has an exact same timeline as when comparing it to one another, so if twilight was before sunset, her curiosity towards being a princess would be worrisome for celestia, which would cause her to vanish into the mirror without any trace of her, and then sunset would be in where twilight would be normally, and yeah the rest would play out with sunset as the main pony character instead of twilight.
and yeah i know that in canon it may not be possible, yet in some AUs it can if certain events played out right for twilight to turn her nightmare form.
Sure anything is possible if you consider complete AU stories. But as I was saying, Twi in canon never had an assured nightmare route.
Luna went Nightmare due to lack of sisterly communication and envy building up in her already powerful soul and turning her basically Vader. Her attitude and path made becoming a nightmare a certainty.
Sunset went Nightmare cause Celestia focused too much on building up Sunset’s off the charts magic, intelligence and charisma to the point where her ego grew out of control to the point of where her ambitions to achieve alicorn-hood did not align and Celestia and Sunset’s mother-daughter relationship fell apart and Sunset ran away to realize her plans, and when she finally got the crown the corruption was more then she bargained for and she got Nightmared while in obvious pain. Her attitude and path also made becoming a nightmare a certainty.
Sci-Twi, on the other hand, sort of fell into the Nightmare-ication by nigh complete accident caused by her artificial amulet going haywire and being peer-pressured into a moment of weakness. Not that there isn’t a repressed side to Twi if magically drawn out, there is, but its not a route she would normally take.
….
As for an AU where Sunset and Twilight’s roles are flipped, while its certainly an interesting AU idea…its not as practical in practice I dont think.
Twilight and Sunset are two very different people, both when nurture AND nature are concerned. We know for a fact that Twi, any Twi, has a naturally submissive and subservient personality, which is arguably what Celestia wanted in a replacement apprentice after she failed both her sister and her daughter-in-almost-every-sense Sunset, while Sunset has a free thinking and ambitious personality that was initially healthy for both parties(nothing about Celestia and Twilight’s relationship is healthy) but the quest to make Sunset her apprentice only fed Sunset’s ego after a while.
….
But I digress…
The point is, one can’t switch Sunset with Pony Twilight and expect her to make the same decisions Sunset did. It just wouldn’t happen. Twi completely lacks the rebellions attitude necessary to make Sunset’s decisions, and inversely, if Sunset was in Twilight’s position, Sunset would question Celestia’s judgement calls a lot more and the series would veer off in a very different and less predictable direction.
Just because they both became nightmares does not make them candidate’s for the other person’s scenario.
Well I do get your trying to say, yet if something that causes pony twi into taking all the magic for selfish gain.
And I know what you mean there, yet anything’s possible if pony twi went down the nightmare route.
And besides I’m only bringing it up, cause an alternate timeline where pony sunset and pony twilight switched, where sunset is in pony twi’s place and vise versa, would’ve been cool.
See, if pony-twi(in that universe where sunset and Twilight are switched) ends up becoming midnight sparkle, that would’ve been it.

A few big problems with those ideas.
For one thing, (less importantly), its never really explained the dynamics of the time travel spell, whether Twi getting caught in the ride meant her alternate self wouldn’t have a place in the new timeline. Twilight’s existence in the New timelines is basically non-existant, although I can’t remember if there was a throwaway line for her alternate self.
Second, and more importantly, your making some very odd assumptions that Pony Twilight would somehow become a Nightmare without Celestia….despite none of the catalysts like the insta-corrupt amulet made from pre-existing elements or Crystal Prep ideology to peer pressure her.
Simply put, it would not. Sci-Twi’s first movie and her transformation hinged on the Humane 6 already awakening as elements due to Pony Twi and Sunset’s dimensional interference in the first EG movie. She was overcharged with most of the elements before awakening as one herself, a reoccurring theme in the EG movies.
Sans Celestia, Pony Twilight was still in an environment where she made at least one friend and a few acquaintances. In terms of research, Twi and Moondancer were already prodigies. It was her progressively worsening obsession with pleasing Celestia that caused her to ignore Moondancer later in life.
Sci-twi’s initial school on the other hand had no peers and created a social barrier between herself and the more average students, despite Sci-Twi growing up with less antisocial behavior then Pony Twi had thanks to never developing a brown nosing, over dependent complex with Princess Celestia.
At worst, Sci-Twi was a little more introverted, but even taking that into account, its no contest who was more earnest. Sci-Twi welcomed friendship when it came her way. And naturally, with no ulterior motive to make reports to Celestia.

you may be right on that, yet in the season 5 finale in an alternate timeline, the sonic rainboom didn’t happen, which in turn didn’t cause twilight’s magic to go haywire in front of every every pony, and celestia would’ve never noticed what’s happening up there at that point in time.
so yeah pony twi would likely end up like sci-twi in some way shape or form, and will somehow turn into a nightmare form of herself, probably destroying everything in that one timeline where everything is nothing except a barren wasteland.
Despite being peer-pressured into using the crown, Sci-Twi was demonstrating even at the beginning to be way more open and yearning for true connections and friendship. She already sings at the very beginning that knowledge and meeting expectations alone have become meaningless. She openly enjoyed Human AJ’s and others help compared to the empathy-less Crystal Prep during the tournament. On instinct, Sci-Twi was already seeking friendship way more then early PonyTwi did.
So I don’t see how your statement really rings true at all. At least, not in the way you mean.
Without Celestia’s overbearing presence and overflowing desire to meet expectations imprinted on Pony Twi, Pony Twi would of stayed good friends with Moondancer. Counter to that, Sci-Twi’s academic achievements caused a rift between her an her particular school’s kids, and Crystal Prep was even worse and peer pressured her into using the magi-science amulet, but AJ and the other Humane 6 treated her with earnest friendship, and she openly enjoyed it. It felt right to SciTwi from the getgo, while Pony Twi often treated such sentiments as unnecessary and unwanted. Sci-Twi going Midnight Sparkle was mostly an effect of her current circumstances and setting, not a less healthy mindset, but in terms of emotional maturity and desire for friendship, she was already on a better path then PonyTwi ever was for her own non-existent self-agency.
While Celestia abruptly set Pony Twi to get friends in Episode 1, the way she was raised BY that point, on the other hand, prioritized Twilight meeting Celestia’s expectations above all us, which is why Twilight’s ambitions regarding listening to her own wants and needs and desiring friendship vs meeting Celestia’s expectations are all over the place in the entire series, and inevitably, Twilight doesn’t question Celestia plan for her from S3 onward even once. She gets almost no character arcs that involve her own choices, she’s a princess by the end of S3, and she’s Celestia’s replacement by the end of the series. Nothing is learned. Twilight never learns a thing about her personal wants and needs.
Edited
well to put it simply, without celestia, pony twi would’ve never learned anything about friendship, and would likely end in the same path as her human doppelganger there.
Except Sci-Twi and Pony Twi have the least amount of traits in common with themselves, as Sci Twi was raised without overbearing Celestia and thus Sci Twi never became a brown noser, so Sci Twi instinctively values friendship above all else once she learns about unlike Pony Twi who keeps on prioritizing brown nosing like in the movie.
exactly
yes i’m well aware of that, and besides pony twi would’ve end up like sci-twi there, had princess celestia not intervened in keeping her in check from the start.
Well, I guess Midnight Sparkle is an evil doppelgängers to both Princess Twilight and Sci-Twi. Possibly similar to how Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon are evil doppelgängers to Celestia and Luna. Because Midnight Sparkle is like Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon.
@Shimmering Spectacle
Well, Midnight Sparkle is possibly a villain who possesses Sci-Twi in both Friendship Games and Legend of Everfree. Midnight was actually an evil creation by Sci-Twi because of Principal Cinch.
Appearance, voice, name, and some traits are the only thing Sci and pony share. Everything else…you get the picture.
doppelganger
Not at all, no.
Yet they’re technically the same person
