Is there any reason to assume any other military unit would fair better when caught off guard by such a superior foe? (It outright states they blew the element of surprise against the Mane 6.) It as loss for the Bolts, but much more justifiable than their other losses.

If the setting had any way to see what’s on the other side without sending anyone over (remote operated vehicles, a specific spell), it would.
 
But as they don’t it’s forgivable as there’s no safer option. At worst it’s the baseline intelligence for the setting as opposed to poor writing.
