“you’re the family I never had” I interpret here as being the husband and kids she never had, hence “like a son to me” too.

@Background Pony to be honest, we never even heard about her “supportive brother and foalsitter” until 51 episodes in. So I can imagine her saying this, and completely ignoring her other family members again…
