A lot of this information is unconfirmed as the details are still emerging, so take this with a healthy pinch of salt, but it appears the con organisers wildly exceeded their bite:chew ratio, invited 20+ guests but failed to attract enough attendees (only 1,200 of an expected 2,000). The money ran out, the hotel had to charge the guests whose expenses were supposed to be comped, and the organisers have gone silent about the whole thing. The big-name guests have ended up organising whip-rounds and emergency auctions to help out the guests who can’t afford the multi-hundred dollar hotel bills they’ve suddenly found themselves stuck with, and the whole thing has turned out to be a massive, disorganised mess. That’s my understanding.
