It’s not like G4 invented the whole “friendly cartoon characters have huge eyes” thing. I can see how the small eyes look off to people.

I have to say something for you:
 
There is a big abyss between ‘uncanny valley’ and “not attending our personal tastes”.  
Let’s not get confused by that, the design actually works perfectly and is still very cute. It’s way different from Sonic for example, because, in Sonic, the design was interfering the proposal for the character: It’s like baking a bread to be sweet and make it more sour than sweet. Sunny Starscout here was intended to be sweet and still is way more sweet than sour (and that’s actually what makes her unique and even more interesting), talking about the design. And, like I’ve mention before (and many of you too), it could be way more sweet by being rounded and have bigger eyes (and in terms of design, round means perfect, cute, soft, etc.; Bigger eyes means more expressive, delightful, with greater impact, etc..), but changing that also takes away the uniqueness of it and you know what can happen for each and every single change on a recipe. I hope this can enlighten your thoughts about it.

After seeing the teaser gif released today, I’m doing a 180 and thinking that the new style is just fine, and just as cute as G4.

Can we pull off Sonic The Movie and fix those faces before the premiere???

Yeah, I agree.  
Your changes makes it look better, but I still believe there could be some adjustments over her jaw and snout to make her even more cute and perfect.
