Yeah, as i wrote below it could be the explanation why there is SO much purple. I hope.

To be fair purple is a nice color.
 
But for real, these are probably just quickly made merch designs. FiM sometimes had G1-esque merch, because Hasbro thinks they sell better; we’ll just have to wait and seeeee what they’ll come up with for the show, which is coming out in a whole ass year.

… Y’all know that 2D vectors of 3D-animated movies always look weird, right? Just because the outlines are like that doesn’t mean it’ll carry over the 2D-animated content that comes after the movie.

Don’t call me a twat you git. Anyway that is true. Hasbro often uses horrible design choices for their merch, like the dull-loking mane 6 you often get on promo materials, products and such, which could be this case but these drawings looks more close to what they will look when they will be actually revealed. There is still a chance that this is the design they have in the movie (which is supposed to be in 3d) that often poorly translates into 2D.  
In the end, all the new things scare fans, is not only “this fandom”. Every time something gets a new design, the fans will be perplexed or mad.

I do believe it’s jumping the gun to be so closed-minded about these character designs because of a pillow case. This fandom is unpleasable, I swear. There’s just nothing else to say.

It would be smart to have more opposing colors in the squad.

G4 used color theory most of the time to make things stand out better, often using analogous colors.  
You had a color for the coat/mane and a lighter/darker variation of the same for the outline. so if you are pink, you get a darker pink.  
In this case the g5 are drawn ALL with purple outlines, except for the upper part of the muzzle because reasons and Pipp’s Wings are white instead of following the coat colors which is quite a strange thing to do, since it separates them from the body

 
Yes, because G4 had none of those dreaded girly colors as major parts of main character color schemes
