Always… Always people give the ‘just use X techno-chauvanistic solution, screw something older’ schpiel without considering there might be a good reason it wasn’t done already!
Some people live in places whose local infrastructure means they literally can’t stream videos, or the signal is choppy.
Some can’t afford to pay regularly for a service they may or may not use enough in a given month to justify subscription cost.
People with children may not have the option of handing over their computers any time their kids want to see a film. Or they find the limitless at-your-fingers options of streaming a hypnotic to developing minds, that sometimes won’t seek more productive stimulation while it’s there.
Others buy DVD players because they want physical copies of movies. Folks don’t have to depend on anyone else for access to them then, and the discs can’t be destroyed by such feeble events as an accidental mouse click or two.

A whole family might have trouble doing that on a single computer screen, and doing so cuts down noticeably on the quality of everything anyway.
Movies are usually more enjoyable when you can feel less distant from what’s happening onscreen. Try watching ‘The Godfather’ on a bigscreen TV with surround-sound. Then watch it on your laptop or smartphone, and you’ll notice it’s a lot less satisfying.

Issues 11-12 of the IDW comics (about how Shining Armor and Cadance first became an item) took place in that timeframe, too. And they were a blast. The issues were crammed with period cultural references, often for comedic effect.
There were many other ‘wink and nod’ moments, too. Young Mayor Mare scoffs at the suggestion from her aptitude tests that she should go into civil service. In a background joke by Andy Price, a pony version of “Quantum Leap”‘s Sam Beckett was evidently responsible for ensuring the couple’s romance gelled. And although no special attention is called to it, we see both how and when a tiny Vinyl Scratch gets her cutie mark.

Umm, dude? Unless you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you wouldn’t fully understand why video rental shops were so popular. For some it was part of their childhood. Back in a time when the internet was still in its infancy. So something like video steaming wasn’t invented. Hell, this was back when digital video disks were about the size of vinyl records and could only be afforded by the rich. Where VHS Tapes was the main form of media format for movies and tv shows.

Duck - "someone befriended them, saved them, coaxed them out of their shell, and showed them that sex is nothing to be afraid of. I’m kind of envious of that rape victim"

at least dvds can be copied. and vhs tapes could be recorded on, and copied. streaming services waste more bandwidth than the entire rest of the internet, just to help amazon spy on you more effectively.

besides, who buys a dvd player these days? just get a dvd drive for your PC.
