I know the other posts are old but I have read somewhere the Spike Test was the Kobayashi Maru Test (Star Trek) of Celestias School.
Unicorns are given a unsolveable Task to look how they react, if they realize they can’t hatch the Egg.
So without the raw Power of Twilight, Spike never would have hatched.
From a later Episode we know it need the Heat of an Volcano to hatch an Dragon Egg.
