5Chapter 15: Knuckles & Knuckles  
Notes: That’s trouble with T, and that rhymes with E, and that stands for Eggman (Oh no.)

Ch. 15: Triple Trouble, Super Trouble
 
Knuckles was now back where he started, walking among the landscape of Mushroom Hill.
 
“That Eggrobo wouldn’t be dumb enough to stick around in this area. Of course, I know it’s only following Robotnik’s orders. It’s been leading me on a wild goose chase. Why else would we be back in Mushroom Hill? Well, I can make this work to my advantage. I can start looking for the Super Emeralds.”
 
He got off to a good start by punching through a series of walls that hid a glowing giant ring. Once he touched it…
 
FLASH
 
“What in the world? I’m in the Master Emerald chamber. I guess this is how Sonic and Tails knew how to get here.”
 
Just as before with Sonic, the Chaos Emeralds went shooting out of Knuckles and set themselves in the platforms surrounding the Master Emerald. They were now pale grey in color and a lot bigger.
 
“So that’s how it works…I guess. Well, if this is what it takes, I’ll collect all the Super Emeralds as well. I’m guessing all I need to do it touch one of them.”
 
FLASH
 
“This pocket dimension doesn’t look too different. I still see nothing but a few rings, and a lot of spheres. Wait, what are these yellow ones for?”
 
BOING
 
Knuckles was sent flying halfway across the dimension.
 
“Well that answers my question. Ah, there’s the Emerald. One down, six to go.”
 
As soon as Knuckles returned to Mushroom Hill, he immediately started searching for another power ring.
 
“I’m glad all those annoying Badniks are gone. Otherwise this would take even longer. Speaking of which, I wonder where that Eggrobo went.”
 
Knuckles shrugged as he began to wander through the forest, stopping every so often to punch through another wall. He soon came across another giant ring.
 
FLASH
 
“I still can’t believe it’s that easy. Well, live and learn. These pocket dimensions with all their checkerboards are starting to make me dizzy. We do what we must to get these Super Emeralds.”
 
He was once again scouting through the forest. Suddenly, there was a commotion. He climbed to the top of a hill, and there was an army of various Badniks headed straight towards him.
 
“Eggman must be getting worried. Oh well, at least now things are more interesting.”
 
Knuckles charged straight to the middle of the mass of Badniks, punching and kicking the entire way.
 
“I have to make sure not one Badnik gets away. I won’t have Eggman using the critters I protect as batteries.”
 
He barreled through the assorted Badniks until every single one was destroyed, and subsequently every animal was freed.
 
“Well, that was fun, but now it’s back to business.”
 
He headed deeper into the forest.
 
“I sense that there’s one more giant ring left in the area. I’ll find it and move on. No doubt the doctor and his lackey have done the same. Ah, there’s one more giant ring left.”
 
Knuckles dug underground until he came to a small cavern. That’s where he found the Ring.
 
FLASH
 
“I think this pocket dimension is adding more of these bumper spheres. Ah, there’s the Emerald.”
 
…
 
“And that makes three. I can’t sense any more Emeralds around here. I’ll climb this tree to plan my next move.”
 
Knuckles quickly made it to the top of a very tall tree, and that’s when he saw…
 
“Hey, there he goes!”
 
The Eggrobo was already a good distance away, and was headed straight in the direction of Sandopolis.
 
“I can’t say I’m crazy about the heat, but at least sand is easy to dig through. An ancient place like those desert ruins is bound to have portals to the Emeralds.”
 
Knuckles began to glide after the Eggrobo, and with a few helpful updrafts, he never set foot on the ground until he actually reached Sandopolis.
 
“I never really noticed how close the desert is to the forest…oh well, it’s an island floating in the sky, so I suppose there’s not too much logic at work.”
 
Knuckles looked out at the vast desolate landscape.
 
“No point trekking across the dunes, I’m sure they headed straight for the pyramid. However, it wouldn’t hurt to check the surrounding ruins for more Emeralds.”
 
As he glided towards the pyramid, he sensed something, and then dropped to the ground.
 
“My instincts are telling me to follow this quicksand. That seems crazy, but so is this entire scenario.”
 
Knuckles relaxed, took a deep breath, and allowed the sinking sand to take him under. He then started to reach forward, and sure enough, there was a lage gaping hole that led straight to a giant ring.
 
FLASH
 
“It feels like I’m getting through those spheres faster. Anyway, I’ll check these ruins over here.”
 
He began to smash through several walls.
 
“It can’t get any worse than they are now. These ruins are already sinking beneath the sand as it is.”
 
At last, behind one of the walls was another giant ring portal.
 
FLASH
 
“I must be getting better at these things, because it feels like barely any time has past. On the other hand, who’s to say time works the same way in that dimension?”
 
At last, he reached the pyramid.
 
“I’m glad Sonic took care of that weird guardian rock thing. I’ve got enough problems without it popping up again.”
 
As he entered the pyramid, it was almost pitch black, and the ghosts were everywhere.
 
“Ghosts?” Knuckles shuddered, “I don’t care for ghosts, but nothing will stop my quest.”
 
Whenever the ghosts got close, Knuckles threw a rather futile punch. The ghosts would simply disappear for about a minute, only to re-materialize a few feet away. Knuckles tried to igmore them as he used his strength to move heavy blocks onto switches in order to advance.
 
“There’s one more ring portal in this pyramid.”
 
He began to climb up higher. A lot of sand was falling through the holes in the ceiling, but he pressed on and found the giant ring.
 
FLASH
 
“It’s actually nice to be in this pocket dimension. Sand is so coarse, and rough, and irritating…and it gets everywhere. At least here everything is smooth. Ah, and now I’ve got six Emeralds.”
 
Knuckles reached the very interior of the pyramid, but there was no sign of the Eggrobo. He looked around the room until he found a giant hole.
 
“This tunnel heads straight to the volcano. I should’ve known. Eggman and his stupid machines are after the Master Emerald again. I’m going to have to move it after this is over.”
 
Knuckles dove down, gliding to slow his fall. He maneuvered his way through the depths of the volcano, avoiding any lava or falling rocks.
 
“Wait, the last Emerald, I can sense the ring portal somewhere in here.”
 
He went deeper underground, tunneling through rocks until he found a small chamber. There was the ring portal.
 
FLASH
 
“After this, I would really like not having to see any more blue spheres for a while. And with that, I have all seven Super Emeralds at last. I could use their power if necessary, but more importantly, they’re out of the hands of that mad doctor and his minions. I better move fast, the Master Emerald isn’t too far now.”
 
As he went deeper into the volcano, the heat subsided ever so slightly, and the lava hardened into beautiful crystals. He knew he had reached the Hidden Palace. But as he reached the chamber…
 
“It’s not here!”
 
Knuckles paused for a few minutes, as if waiting for a sign, but nothing happened.
 
“It must still be on the island. Well, there’s only one way to go from here. I know they didn’t double back, so that means they used the teleporter to head to Sky Sanctuary.”
 
Knuckles rushed towards the nearest teleporter.
 
FLASH
 
Knuckles was now standing on a piece of Sky Sanctuary. In the distance he could see Angel Island. It appeared to be okay, after all, it was still floating in the air, but it was also teetering. If the Master Emerald was taken to far away for too long, it would fall yet again.
 
“Wait until I get my hands on those stupid robots!”
 
Just then, the Eggmobile zoomed over. Attached to the bottom was a giant claw that reached out and grabbed Knuckles.
 
“And they say these games are rigged,” said a familiar voice.
 
Knuckles looked up at the driver. It was the Eggrobo, but the voice was clearly Robotnik.
 
“Finally decided to speak up, doctor?”
 
“I really wanted that Emerald, you so-called guardian, so I decided to keep quiet and play games with you until I was sure I’d won.”
 
“Well then you spoke too soon.”
 
“Oh-ho-ho-ho! Is that so? We’ll see about that! Mecha! Come forth and claim your prize!”
 
Mecha Sonic sped into view on command.
 
“I thought Sonic destroyed that thing?”
 
“Almost, but not quite. It took some time to repair him. That’s one of the reasons my Eggrobo distracted you for so long.”
 
Mecha Sonic rolled into his bladed ball form and shot through the air towards Knuckles. Just before he could reach him, Knuckles wrenched himself free from the claw, and instead, Mecha smashed right into the Eggmobile, causing it and the Eggrobo to explode.
 
“Shame, I was really starting to like that Eggrobo. No matter, it’s Mecha that’s the key to victory!”
 
Mecha began to bounce around in an attempt to kill Knuckles, but the guardian was too agile. As soon as Mecha stopped, Knuckles pummeled him with a flurry of punches. Mecha grabbed him and zoomed around. He then sent Knuckles flying. Knuckles retaliated by gliding back, with his fists stretched straight at Mecha. Upon being hit yet again, Mecha began to dash all over the area.
 
“Hold still, you pale imitation!”
 
Knuckles took a deep breath, and then punched the ground, shattering the platform they were fighting on. This caused Mecha to pause, and Knuckles rushed over to uppercut him. Mecha then dragged himself to a more stable location, with static now shooting from his body.
 
“Now’s the time, my Mecha Sonic. Use your secret weapon!”
 
Mecha Sonic boosted over to an object in the distance.
 
“The Master Emerald! Hand it over, you fake hedgehog!”
 
Mecha Sonic of course said nothing. He zoomed over ot the Master Emerald and jumped on top of it. He was soon surrounded by crackling energy as he was clearly absorbing power from the mighty gem. There was a bright flash of light, and Mecha Sonic was glowing gold while floating in the air.
 
Oh ho ho ho ho ho!” Robotnik’s voice rang out, “Do you like my creation’s upgrade, Knuckles? I finally managed to copy you and that blasted hedgehog’s super mode. Now my Mecha Sonic is the super one! Show him what you can do!”
 
Mecha Sonic zoomed through the air, and then dove at Knuckles. He managed to dodge, but then Mecha starting firing energy balls from his chest.
 
“So your pet has a perversion of the super form,” Knuckles said, dancing about to avoid the blasts, “He’s still no match against me.”
 
“Ha, so tough, so brave, but what are you going to do about it, guardian?”
 
Just as he said this, Mecha Sonic lost his super form. Knuckles quickly leapt towards him and gave him a mighty slug in the face.
 
“Only temporary I see. Your machine can’t truly use such power.”
 
“So he needs a recharge now and then. He’ll still wipe the floor with you!”
 
Mecha Sonic rammed into Knuckles, knocking him out of the way, and headed back to the Master Emerald. Once again, he stood atop the giant gemstone and absorbed its energy. Now charged with the Master Emerald’s power, he repeated his attack. When his power wore off, this time Mecha Sonic moved far too fast for Knuckles to get a hit in. Mecha was again standing atop the Master Emerald. Knuckles got so mad he threw a punch, only to receive a nasty shock.
 
“I should’ve known that would happen.”
 
“Face it, knucklehead, you’re no match for me!”
 
The superpowered Mecha Sonic grabbed Knuckles and threw him as far as possible.
 
“Enough playing around, Mecha, kill him now.”
 
Mecha Sonic boosted into the air and began to charge at Knuckles. Knuckles was shaking his head to regain his composure. That’s when he saw Mecha headed straight for him. Knuckles stood up straight, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes.
 
“The servers are the 7 Chaos. Chaos is power…Power is enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos.”
 
There was a great flash of light, and now Knuckles was glowing. Just as Mecha reached him, they locked hands, and Knuckles delivered a suplex. Mecha again lost his power and dashed back towards the Master Emerald.
 
“Wait a minute,” Robotnik snapped, “What happened with that echidna?”
 
After Mecha recharged, he looked straight at Knuckles. Knuckles was glowing brightly, in a color that seemed to cycle from white to pink to red and back again.
 
“Oh no, not this again!”
 
“That’s right, Eggman. Now I’m Hyper Knuckles! The power of the Chaos and the Super vs. your stolen Master energy. Let’s see who wins, shall we?”
 
Knuckles and Mecha began trading blows with each other. Neither seemed to be slowing down. Mecha fired his energy blasts, but Knuckles seemed to dodge them in the blink of an eye. Yet again, however, Mecha had to go recharge. This time, though, the now Hyper Knuckles grabbed his leg and slammed him into the ground repeatedly. Mecha was beginning to spark, but kept going towards the Master Emerald. Knuckles grabbed Mecha by the neck and looked stright into his cold eyes.
 
“I know you can see this, Eggman. If you ever try to obtain the Master Emerald again, I’ll always be there to stop you.”
 
Knuckles gave Mecha one last mighty uppercut and he went flying into the air. As he crashed to the ground, however, the already tenuous ground began to crack.
 
“Oh no. As if these ancient ruins weren’t…well, ruined enough. I better get moving, but not without the Master Emerald.”
 
Just as Knuckles reached the Master Emerald, the ground collapsed beneath him. Now both he and the Master Emerald were free falling.
 
“No matter what happens to me, the Master Emerald must be saved!”
 
That’s when he heard a noise in the distance. And then there was a familiar voice.
 
“Incoming, knuckle head!”
 
Knuckles looked around, but then realized he should be looking down. That’s when he saw it: the Tornado. Sonic was perched atop the wings, while Tails was piloting, and Amy Rose was in the passenger seat. With an excellent maneuver, Tails managed to make it so both Knuckles and the Master Emerald landed on top of the wings with Sonic.
 
“Hi there! You must be Knuckles. I’m Amy Rose!”
 
“Uh…hi…not that I don’t appreciate the save, but what are you all doing here?”
 
“You may not believe it, Knuckles,” Sonic said, “But it was just a feeling.”
 
Knuckles smiled, “I believe it.”
 
“Nice look by the way, Knux. Very flashy…is that what I looked like when I went hyper?”
 
“You had more colors, I think,” Tails replied.
 
“So what exactly happened?” Sonic asked.
 
“I’ll tell you on the way. Let’s land as soon as possible.”
 
Later
 
“Now there’s a story worth hearing,” Sonic said, “Eggman sure has been busy, making a robot that could go super.”
 
The quartet was sitting in a nice quiet spot in the Angel Island jungle. They even had a picnic spread.
 
“Thanks for bringing snacks,” Knuckles said, scarfing down some grapes, “I was so dead set on chasing those robots I forgot to eat.”
 
“I told you it was a good idea,” Amy smugly said to Sonic.
 
“Yeah, sure, whatever,” he replied while eating a chili dog, “I’m just glad that, despite having to bring you, we made it on time.”
 
“You’re so mean sometimes, Sonic.”
 
He simply smirked in response.
 
“So where are you going to hide the master Emerald now, Knuckles?” Tails asked.
 
“I was going to try different spots, but actually, I think I saw some ruins deep in the jungle that would be a good spot.”
 
“Cool, but we’d better get going. We’ll come visit some other time, Knux.”
 
“Someday I’d like to visit your home, but with all that’s happened, now I feel more unsure of leaving the Master Emerald alone.”
 
Sonic gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder, “One day, pal, you’ll get to see the rest of the world. Maybe we can get Tails to install a security camera or something along those lines.”
 
“That could take a lot of work, Sonic,” Tails said.
 
“I appreciate the thought, but no thanks. I’m sure my time will come soon enough. You know, I used o wonder why I had to guard it all the time. Perhaps this whole ordeal was a test. I might never know all the answers, but perhaps it’s better that way.”
 
“We started off on the wrong foot, Knux, but now we’re friends. We’ll always find a way to meet up again. Take care, buddy.”
 
Sonic, Tails, and Amy headed for the plane. Amy stopped, and the gave Knuckles a hug.
 
“What was that for?”
 
“I thought maybe you needed a hug after all that. I haven’t known you long, but you’re friends with Sonic and Tails, that means we’re friends, too.”
 
She then gathered up her belongings and headed to the Tornado.
 
“This place is so fascinating, Knuckles,” Tails said, “I’m already eager to come back and study a few things. For instance, that mural with Sonic on it. I mean, what are the odds? What other secrets could there be?”
 
“Even I haven’t explored the entire island, so I’ll be waiting.”
 
Tails waved as he flew into the cockpit. Sonic stuck out his hand, and Kncukles did likewise. and they shook.
 
“See ya, blue blur.”
 
“Until next time, rad red.”
 
The Tornado started up, and Sonic leapt back onto his spot atop the wings. The plane took off and circled around a bit. As Knuckles waved them off, there was a flash of light. The Chaos Emeralds had disappeared once again, while the Super Emeralds went back to their dormant state in the Hidden Palace.

12Chapter 8: Metallic Madness

Ch. 8: Time to end this Metallic Madness
 
Sonic and Amy were making their way to Robotnik’s fortress. Well actually, Sonic was trying to go alone, but Amy kept following him.
 
“For the last time, Amy, it’s too dangerous. I want to get in and get out. If you’re there, I’ll have to keep an eye on you.”
 
“I can take care of myself, Sonic. Besides, you might need me to help you.”
 
“I’m sure in any other situation your help would be appreciated, but here it’s too risky.”
 
“You know I’m going to follow you anyway.”
 
“Alright,” Sonic sighed, “Let me go in first. Then wait about an hour or so. That way I’ll have taken care of any traps or Badniks there might be.”
 
“Deal. Before you go, I just want to say one thing. Sonic, you can do anything!”
 
Sonic smiled, gave her a thumbs up, and ran inside the dark fortress.
 
Meanwhile
 
Robotnik had cameras all over his base, and was waiting for Sonic to show up.
 
“The war began. Earth trembled in fear. Bald, brainy, and cold-hearted. The distance grows closer, little by little. Wow! The power he possesses is incredible! He doesn’t stand a chance!”
 
“Hey, Eggman! You know the speakers are on right? Or do you just really love hearing the sound of your voice?”
 
“I do, as a matter of fact. This is my turf, Hedgehog. You can’t do anything, so don’t even try it. Get some help.”
 
“You talk too much, Eggman.”
 
Apart from all the turbines, the first thing he saw was a blue rhinoceros beetle Badnik called Mecha-Bu. On the end of its horn was a buzz-saw. Sonic leapt over the Badnik, only to run into another Mecha-Bu.
 
“Come and get me!”
 
The two Badniks charged at Sonic, but he leapt out of the way and they ended up destroying each other.
 
“That’s one problem solved. Everything here is metallic. How boring is that?”
 
He avoided several spinning blades on wheels, and a dozen or so buzz-saws. He ducked quickly to avoid a Poh-Bee. This one was similar in looks to the ones at Wacky Workbench, but instead of a blaster on the end of its abdomen, it swung a pair of maces on long chains. Sonic rolled out of the way, only to be stopped by a new Badnik called Scarab. It used its long claws to grab Sonic and keep him rolled up in a ball. It then shoved him back in the direction he came.
 
“Oh, a double team, eh?”
 
The pill bug Badnik from before, Dango, was also here. There were even more Mecha-Bu. Sonic led the swarming Badniks on a chase.
 
“I’ll try to go slow, guys.”
 
“What are you doing, you stupid machines? Don’t do what Sonic does!”
 
More and more Badniks joined the fray as they chased him. That’s when he saw an opportunity. A Badnik that appeared to be a large walking bomb was just ahead. It was fittingly called Bigbom. Sonic ran up to the Bigbom and stood there. The Badnik’s fuse was now lit. The other Badnik had caught up and were starting to attack. That’s when Sonic grabbed the long chain of the nearest Poh-Bee and ran in a circle around every Badnik. He tied them all together next to the Bigbom. Then he ran far enough to not be caught in the blast.
 
BOOM
 
Flowers now adorned the area.
 
“Who says I’m all running and no brains?”
 
Sonic had to get past moving platforms, some of which disappeared and reappeared. As he went deeper into the fortress, he noticed an overabundance of two things: spikes, and Robotnik’s face. He now came to a corridor that was much smaller than usual. There was also a questionable beam of red light.
 
“Now how am I supposed to fit through here?”
 
His curiosity got the better of him. He touched the beam. A shock traveled through his body, and before he knew it, he had shrunk.
 
“Oh you have got to be kidding.”
 
“Ho, ho, ho! You look ridiculous, Sonic. You are now 25% of your original height.”
 
“Well at least I can get through these narrow passages now.”
 
He made his way across conveyor belts, pistons, and the occasional Bigbom.
 
“I can still jump as high as I used to. That’s kinda weird. No time to think about it. This madness ends now. Metallic Madness, if you will.”
 
He was now in a more open area.
 
“I really hope this can be reversed.”
 
“Sonic, is that you?”
 
“Oh no.”
 
Amy Rose had caught up.
 
“Has it been an hour already?”
 
“No, but I couldn’t help myself. I stayed back until you cleared the way. You look so cute!”
 
She picked him up and hugged him.
 
“You’re like a little stuffed animal.”
 
“Put me down and help me look for a way back to normal.”
 
“What makes you think Eggman would have a way to return to normal?”
 
“Yeah! What makes you think that, Hedgehog?”
 
“Because only you would do something that stupid.”
 
Sure enough, there was another laser with a blue beam. Sonic ran towards it, and with a zap, he was his normal size.
 
“I really need to work on my design plans.”
 
“What a joke. Amy, you stay here while I time travel.”
 
“Why?”
 
“Because you can’t run fast enough. Now stay out of trouble.”
 
Past
 
The fortress was now merely a construction zone. Against a beautiful morning sky, Sonic ran past warning lights, traffic cones, and barricades. Not much else was different in this past. Robotnik’s face still adorned the walls. All the traps were still in place. The only thing missing, it seemed, was all the cameras. Sure enough, Robotnik was installing them.
 
“I would get my minions to do this, but some things you have to do yourself. With these in place, I can monitor that blasted hedgehog all throughout my base. Sonic, dead or alive, is mine.”
 
Sonic quickly ran in a different direction.
 
“Sheesh, what a grouch. No sense in trying to stop him. The real target is that machine thing.”
 
He destroyed and headed back to the future.
 
Present
 
“There you are. Did you fix the past?”
 
“That I did Amy. Still, there’s one more thing I have to take care of before I’ll be sure of a good future.”
 
“What’s that?”
 
That’s when she noticed the giant floating ring.
 
“Get the last Time Stone.”
 
Special
 
This place was almost as crazy-looking as the last. The sky was green. The water was pink. A large planet was in the background. It almost looked like it was going to touch the ground. A large pyramid-like building dominated the landscape. It was surrounded by futuristic towers, a forest, and small mountains.
 
“I’m not even gonna ask.”
 
The seventh and final Time Stone, a lovely red color, was now in his possession.
 
Bad Future
 
He went straight into a true nightmare. All the machinery was rusted and broken down. The lights kept flickering. Everything was a brown color.
 
“This is sad.”
 
The Time Stones came out and began to spin in the air. There was a blinding light.
 
Good Future
 
“Sonic, there you are. Whatever you did, it worked a miracle.”
 
“You’re telling me.”
 
All the décor was a sky blue. There were potted plants and fountains everywhere. Sonic and Amy kept walking. They were in a large building, but walked outside to see what else had changed. The area was now dotted with buildings, which were in turn surrounded by trees and ponds. As they kept walking, they came to a dead end room. Then a very slowly falling platform with spikes lining the bottom appeared. There was a space in the platform for one to get through.
 
“Looks like we’ll have to wait for enough of these things to drop so we can get out. I hate waiting.”
 
With that strange obstacle behind them, they went on. There was a door just ahead.
 
“Amy, stay here.”
 
“Why?”
 
“This door has to lead to where Eggman is holed up. It’s just me and him now.”
 
“Give him the old Sonic boom! Save the planet from disaster. Show him this ain’t his neighborhood to take over.”
 
“Enough already. Wait until I call you.”
 
The door opened and closed automatically. He was in a small room with only two doors: the one he came in through, and the exit on the other side. He walked towards the exit, but then the lights went out.
 
“I don’t mind the dark, but what’s the point?”
 
Then he saw a yellow light hovering in the air. It stopped just above his head.
 
“What is…? Oh wait.”
 
Sonic dodged the incoming laser blast. It was one of the firefly Badniks from before, Hotaru. Two more appeared and all three began flying around and shooting lasers.
 
“There’s always something stopping me from getting to Eggman.”
 
Sonic bobbed and weaved back and forth, avoiding the blasts.
 
“This is getting annoying.”
 
The trio of fireflies closed in on him. That’s when he leapt up and smashed them one by one.
 
“Now that that’s out of the way.”
 
The door opened to a large open room.
 
“It’s time for the Final Fever, Hedgehog. Behold the Psyco-Egg!”
 
It was a circular pod with four large spikes attached. They rotated around the pod.
 
“From this angle, it looks like a giant d-pad from a video game controller.”
 
“That’s it! Get yourself ready for a fight!”
 
The machine touched down on the ground. Robotnik spun the spikes around in an attempt to crush Sonic.
 
“Missed me! Maybe you shoulda added more spikes, Eggman.”
 
The machine lifted back into the air and shot the spikes at the ground.
 
“That’s one. Two, so close. Three, try again. Four isn’t your lucky number either.”
 
The spikes were being drawn back to the pod, but before they got there, Sonic gave the doctor a good hit. This caused one of the spikes to malfunction and explode.
 
“You little…”
 
With the three remaining spikes, Robotnik tried the same strategy. The main difference being that the spikes were spinning faster. It wasn’t as easy to try and stomp around with only three spikes.
 
“Stop it while you still have some dignity, Eggman. I’ve seen what the future could look like if you go around carelessly exploiting this planet.”
 
“As if I’m going to listen to you. I would never neglect my own creations.”
 
“Whatever happened, it wasn’t pretty. Look around you, this good future has nature and technology working together.”
 
“So what?! I’m not in charge, am I? It’s only a utopia if I’m the one who made it so.”
 
Sonic waited for the right moment to hit the pod again. Now with only two spikes, Robotnik resorted to keeping a distance and firing the spikes as projectiles again.
 
“Your plan could really use some work, Eggman. In fact, all your machines and Badniks have been pretty lacking this time around.”
 
He gave the pod another hit, leaving only one spike.
 
“You think you’re all that? Try this on for size, Hedgehog!”
 
Robotnik pointed the last spike towards the ground. He then used it as a makeshift pogo stick.
 
“Isn’t this fun, Sonic?”
 
“Not really. That’s why I’m putting an end to this game.”
 
Sonic took a running start and leapt at the pod. Using the momentum, he gave it one last hard hit. The Psyco-Egg was now breaking down, and the room with it.
 
“Maybe I shouldn’t have hardwired the surrounding area to explode if my machine was destroyed. Here’s hoping you don’t make it, Sonic. We’re outta here!”
 
Robotnik made a break for it. Then Amy Rose came running in.
 
“I’m guessing you beat him. This sort of thing always happens when you beat the bad guy.”
 
“That it does, Amy. Now hang on tight, because I’m getting us outta here.”
 
“You don’t have to ask me twice.”
 
Sonic rolled his eyes as Amy wrapped her arms around his neck. He picked her up in his arms and started running. The ceiling was collapsing. Large support pillars were crashing down around them. The floor was giving way. Sonic jumped from the increasingly limited footholds. Before he knew it, they were running back down the chain that connected Little Planet to the mountain. Sonic ran a bit farther and put Amy down.
 
“Stay here, and watch the fireworks.”
 
“Huh? Sonic, what do you mean?”
 
But he had already sped off. He ran as fast as he could, and with all his might, destroyed the chain connecting Little Planet. With it gone, the planet slowly flew back into the atmosphere.
 
“Finally. Hey, what the…?”
 
The Time Stones appeared and zoomed through the air back to Little Planet. All seven began spinning around the planet, causing a lot of sparkles to appear. The sparks arranged themselves into Sonic’s face.
 
“Well how do you like that? It captures me perfectly.”
 
The glittering sparks then fell to the ground, and everywhere they landed flowers sprouted. An entire field of flowers now covered the landscape. With that, the Time Stones disappeared, and so did Little Planet.
 
“That was amazing!”
 
“It sure was, Amy.”
 
“I guess we won’t see the Little Planet for a while now, huh?”
 
“I can wait.”
 
“I thought you hated waiting?”
 
“I’ve time traveled who knows how many times. This is easy.”
 
“What about Eggman?”
 
“He’s out there somewhere. Probably already plotting something. I’ll be ready.”
 
Elsewhere
 
“My robotizers destroyed, my future ruined, my Metal Sonic defeated, my plan finished! Nothing has gone right!”
 
“Doctor.”
 
“WHAT IS IT?!”
 
“Pardon, sir, but the project you had us work on is nearing completion.”
 
“What?”
 
Robotnik brought up a screen to check all the systems.
 
“So it is. This almost brightens my day. However, if I’m not careful, Sonic will find out about this. I have to distract him. I know. I have just the robot to keep tabs on Sonic.”
 
The robot came in from the next room.
 
“With this spying on Sonic, I can find a way to keep him preoccupied. He has no idea what’s in store for him. Oh, ho ho ho ho ho! Get me a sandwich!”
