Luna’s comment to Twilight in Luna Eclipsed implied that she knew Starswirl. Plus, Starswirl could well have been powerful enough to cast the age spell.  
New headcanon- Sombra is Starswirl, corrupted by black magic.  
Aaand now I ship reformed!Sombra and Twilight. That was fast.

You know what? I think that crazy fan theory about Discord being Starswirl starts to look more and more plausible.

Sombre happened in the same year(s) as the Nightmare Moon era. Starswirl had an apprentice who was a founder of Equestria. Starswirl is a LOOOOT older than Sombre.
