I love this explanation for why she could never use them again…as well as why she chose to leave them behind in the spooky castle despite their obvious previous value.  
(even tho the recent season created another plot hole, ie. why she didn’t give them back to the tree, thus possibly causing the Everfree Forest to exist)

I believe Celestia specifically said the exact reason Discord broke free was because the elements were bonded to Twilight and co. and not her and Luna anymore.
 
…Which now that I mention it, isn’t really relevant to the conversation, but still.

Well, if Celestia could still use the Elements then there wouldn’t have been any need for Twilight and her new friends to do anything, don’t you think?  
I’m willing to accept this as canon, if only because it’s always been my headcanon. A broken, lonely heart cannot command the Elements.
