My headcanon is that when a hive first starts out only the queen can lay eggs which are inseminated by a third party (ie a pony) and the drones all have sexes but are sterile. Once a hive is large enough and healthy enough to be self-sustaining what is supposed to happen is a king emerges and the drones become sexually activated by pheromones he secretes.
 
However Chrysalis was a bit of a chnt and kept her drones ignorant of their nature due to her selfishness. When Thorax broke the chain and became a changeling King this activated all the drones sexual organs and allowed the hive to become self-sutatining.

Headcanon: All changeling females can lay eggs, but during Chrysalis’s reign they didn’t raise their own offspring. Instead, they deposited their eggs in a communal brood-chamber, and Chrysalis oversaw their hatching. That’s why she was regarded as the “hive mother”. As a result, changelings are amazingly ignorant about reproduction–they haven’t figured out that sex leads to babies yet.
 
With their transformation, changelings are trying to reinvent their culture, using ponies as a model. But although they understand the idea of a “nuclear family”, they still haven’t figured out the sex-makes-babies part. So, they still deposit eggs in the communal brood-chamber. Thorax’s job as king is to dole out newly hatched changelings to changeling couples who want children.

Most likely not, since the Changelings have brothers, sisters and parents apart from each other.

Tfw no episode where Fluttershy asks Chrysalis if all the eggs are hers. You have to lay all the eggs.
