We’ve all seen the godawful clipart that gets pasted over the marketing material for FiM, so even if that image actually is official, it might not represent the final look of the show.
 
(I still think Equestria Girls is a terrible idea, of course)

The concept of Equestria Girls has been confirmed, and that is the ONLY thing we know for sure. The picture that everyone THINKS will represents the art style not only looks like an incredibly lazy photoshop, but the only sources we have for it being true are some random asshole who claims to work for Hasbro, and an Anti-brony blog.
 
The drama is because the image REEKS of blatant trolling and half the fandom is apparently too stupid to avoid taking the bait.

Why all the drama? There isn’t any concrete evidence for this happening and what evidence there is states that this is going to be a spin-off of the main series. If you don’t like the idea of a show based off the humanized versions of the Mane 6, no one’s forcing you to watch it.
