If you’re confused about Twilight saying Tempest betrayed Equestria and led the Storm King there, it’s from the movie prequel comic.
Essentially, Tempest meets the Storm King and asks if he can fix her horn. He says he doesn’t have enough magic to do that, and she goes, hey, I know a place with a ton of that, if you promise to fix my horn I’ll show you where it is.

It is karma tho @Background Pony #D353
U are exactly right background pony
Not enough to make it up.
Its ultimately trying to make the mess his plan had cause not get any worse(ie said mess ending up killing everyone for real) and said plan he did biting him in the ass instead of proper punishment.
He should at least deal with that no one would trust him anymore. Like he pulled this iffy plan behind everyone’s back, it would surely damage everyone’s trust in him.
And he needs to learn he can’t just use ANYONE like disposable pawns theres. That is something only bad guys would do, treating others like disposable pawns/cannon fodder. Like make him know that its not right to have even bad guys be used like disposable pawns, they are still living beings.
5, counting the Storm King.
What about his “epic make-up”?
He didn’t amend it.
Everyone else cleaned up his mess.
He shouldn’t have even been able to voice an opinion on what happened to the three much less been present for the fight.
But he learned from it and amended for it. Isn’t that a usual result of karma?
Not really. That was pure stupity and hubris blowing up in his face… again.
So losing his powers, and being imprisoned by the villainous trio for who knows how long doesn’t count as punishment?
Starlight getting a second chance by her villagers makes her situation even worse considering that she still ran away after her first defeat and attacked two of them. She was still willing to ruin lives and attack innocents (Spike for example) to get her goals. And the fact remains that she only got to the point of regretting her actions because Twilight tried so much to help her get there.
The fact still remains that he actually got that opportunity and that one of those six was still dedicated to helping him. Unlike again, with the trio.
Discord again, used to view ponies only as his playthings and plunged Equestria into a chaotic nightmare during his reign. That alone is as bad as what the trio did and all for his own personal amusement and he never showed any regret until he was given a second chance. Starlight’s actions were arguably even more dangerous. Luna attempted to unsurp her sister and bring about eternal night while Tempest knowingly worked for a dangerous warlord and ruined many nations. Its all in the text bubbles of the comic. They were just as bad as Cozy Tirek and Chrysalis.
And as for the trio being “power hungry, egotistical, self serving monsters” wasn’t Discord just that? Loving to abuse his powers and hurting others for his own amusement? And again, he got a chance at redemption despite not even wanting it so I think its pretty unfair that the trio never got one.
Starlight was also given a second chance by the village of ponies she brainwashed and she wasn’t actively trying to ruin a city, culture or the world. Just one friendship. The alternate timelines were an unforeseen consequence that she immediately regretted.
And five of the six were ready to turn Discord to stone when he got his second chance. He accepted the opportunity and nearly squandered it.
Also, the Villainous Trio had destroyed interspecies relations, were about to kill the M6 and after being depowered, still didn’t show regret for their actions. Discord may have his head on backwards but he at least feels bad about what he does.
The VT are power hungry, egotistical, self serving monsters. They may get a chance at redemption but that means giving up their quest for domination. Something else Discord has done.
Ah yes, Starlight and Discord did indeed regret their actions but only after they were given multiple second chances and persistent attempts to change them which again, the trio never got. If Fluttershy had not been their for Discord and Twilight for Starlight I doupt any of them would end up regretting their actions.
And yes, Discord did something stupid and dangerous and was not only left unpunished for it but was also allowed to decide the punishment of those he personally involved in it. Meanwhile not even an attempt at a conversation was given for the trio.
I certainly hope so.
While I agree with everything what Twilight said it kinda feels little bit melodramatic and preachy, but I don’t mind. I think it’s more interesting this way. Better then if Twilight wouldn’t be emotionally attach at all.
Maybe some time in stone could help them to calm dawn a little bit.
Agreed. I do view their punishment as temporary and would like to see those three turn their lives around.
@Starswirl
Yeah, Discord dictating the punishment is a little strange at first glance but it’s a punishment he has suffered and he got a second chance out if it. On a related note:
@Background Pony #B209
Since the princesses and Discord have known each other for so long I’d like to think they’re having the same thought I noted earlier.
@Background Pony #3B32
None of the three have shown any regret for how their actions effected others.
Starlight and Discord have. And while Discord didn’t ask for his second chance, he has shown a great appreciation for it. And really, Fluttershy was the only one to not threaten or act suspiciously of him in that episode.
As for bringing these foes together to boost Twilight’s ego, it’s nothing I view as different from that friend that pays some thugs to take a dive. Stupid as hell and incredibly dangerous, but I never expect Discord to consider the consequences.
Overall, Twilight’s heart and mind are in the right place but her belief that they didn’t have a fair chance personally feels like she’s misblaming herself. There was a number of parties and factors involved.
Edited
Chrysalis was a harsh leader, but we don’t know how day to day life in the hive was like. It is easy to assume that it was worse, but it is also easy to assume that Chrysalis got used to general harshness and as such was stuck in her old ways and mistrusting of new ones. A flaw definately but not something that couldn’t be fixed with some help. By that logic we can say that while Starlight did claim that her ways were better in her town the truth could very well be that she manipulated a bunch of ponies to build a town for her and lied to them about giving up her cutie mark herself and went so far as to attack them when they finally started turning against her.
Discord treated that same nation’s residents as his personel playthings and he didn’t even have the betrayel angle to got on. Discord also didn’t want nor ask for a second chance at first, yet Fluttershy’s persistence won him over in the end. Tirek meanwhile was stuck in the same cage for a very long time where presumably no one tried anything despite it being probably safer to try then with Discord.
Again, by that logic Discord and Starlight were also mimicking the behaviour patterns of other villains. I also doupt that Tartarus was just a scare tactic considering the lack of any sort of talk or implication that she would ever be released and the fact that no one knew she was taken out of Tartarus meaning that literally no one even checked on her during that time. The fact remains that she never got any sort of second chance or attempt at a reformation.
Yea, he tries so hard. Like that time he manipulated three creatures to work together to attack Twilight and her friends in order to set themselves up for failure. And that was after Fluttershy worked so hard to reform him which is something that the trio never got. And all that was after his reign over Equestria from which he was remembered as having a heart as black as stone.
The trio weren’t turned to stone by the M6. In fact, the triple friendship magic blast only stripped them of their powers. It was Celestia, Luna and Discord who petrified them after they were defeated, powerless and immobalized. I don’t know what gap it could be meant to stop but the fact remains that it deemed Discord to be petrified while the trio only got depowered.
Not the mention princesses had the expression as if given advice for a good meal in your favorite restaurant.
Discord and the princessed turned them to stone. Harmony merely depowered them. Discord came up with petrification.
In other words, the very being who forced them on this revenge quest in the first place—Discord—who merely saw them as fodder to boost Twilight Sparkle’s ego—for instance, he didn’t raise Sombra, even though he said he would when disguised as Grogar—then got to decide how to punish them.
Maybe but only after his reformation. Before that he was straight up evil.
If Discord was given second chance after his villainous rempage then trio also deserves one.
Now I’m not saying they shouldn’t be punished, but they should be released some time later to give a rehabilitation a shot.
There is a lot to unpack there.
Chrysalis may have claimed feeding the changelings were her responsibility, but her malevolence and abuse of her position demonstrates a severe lack of empathy.
Tirek may have felt betrayed but he did invade a foreign nation and treated its citizenry as cattle. We also don’t know if Celestia ever did offer him a chance to reform but his behavior in the season four finale seems to imply he would have refused reformation, even if it was offered. He also didn’t ask for a second chance (which the M6 seems very willing to give).
Cozy Glow is problematic. She’s a literal child so Tartarus seems incredibly harsh, but she was mimicking Tirek’s behavior patterns. It’s possible her punishment was meant to scare her straight and maybe teach her that Tirek is a monster, not a friend. Plus it would be extra punishment for Tirek.
Discord is an interesting case. Clumsy and misguided but with generally good intentions he does try to fight against his very nature to be more accommodating, especially in regards to Fluttershy.
I’m sure if any of the other three attempted something similar, or had at least befriended one creature, things could have turned out differently.
But now we get to the question of whether they were turned to stone by the M6 or if the punishment was determined by the magic itself. It’s possible (with so many mysteries surrounding the magic of friendship) that the punishment is meant to be a stop gap so that more can be learned and used in the future. That’s what happened with Discord after all.
By that logic Starlight blew her first chance when she turned down Twilight after her first defeat and Discord blew it twice when he sided with Tirek and brought the trio together and I’m sure that Celestia and Luna’s multiple attempts to defeat him would have clued him in that ponies did not like his chaos.
Chrysalis, meanwhile can be argued that she did what she thought she had to do for her subjects including taking care of a traitor. In Canterlot Wedding she did say that is was her duty to feed them. Her rejection of Starlight was right after she lost everything to friendship and gave the same response that Starlight gave to Twilight. Yet Starlight wasn’t given up on while Chrysalis was.
As for Tirek, from his perspective, Scorpan was the one who betrayed him over his enemies and left him to rot in Tartarus for a thousend years. Surely during all that time Celestia could have sent someone to try and reform him especially after he helped the M6 escape Tartarus. As for Discord, I doupt he trusted him in the first place.
Cozy’s time in school was not a second chance as no one was actively trying to reform her. Most of the classes there seemed to be history and whatever the M6 wanted to teach while the actual friendship stuff seemed to be extracurricular and even then, if I were to memorize a poem it wouldn’t be the same as actually understanding it. In that sense memorizing some lessons enough to get good grades is not the same as actually properly understanding them. When she was revealed to be a villain everyone pretty much gave up on her with no attempt being made to even offer her a second chance.
Cozy Glow attending the School of Friendship hardly counts as an argument for her being irredeemable. If I were to attend a Spanish class and do well in class but not take the lessons to heart, have I really truly learned Spanish?
