No she was too shy and awkward to be able to or know how/act to get noticed/remembered. In-work she’s compared to Fluttershy who no fan blames for her shyness despite the problems it caused her and others.

This is the fault of the writing for failing to convey that aspect (just one easily missed moment breaking “show don’t tell”) or emphasizing her as Fluttershy’s evil counterpart. Don’t blame Wallflower who’s the victim of the bad writing not the cause.

It didn’t help, but the evidence and implication is she was so forgettable that using the Stone didn’t make a difference. Why else would they include that detail if she was supposed to be sympathetic?

She was so sympathetic and a good person they ditched her the moment after they promised to be her friends and left her with Derpy who is too cinnamon roll to have standards.
 

I always imagine that Equestrian Magic has an effect on humans, like if its not friendship-related then the magic draws out the darkness within a human’s heart(or a pony in human form for Sunset’s case).  
Worst-case scenario being some monstrous transformation.  
Least-worst case scenario would be it does something like affects one’s sense of judgement, which happens to Wallflower here pretty much.

God forbid a character have flaws in a show to create conflict and intrigue. We need more mary sues that everyone likes because they’re so perfect, amirite?

True but her using the stone to erase awkward-helloes only made it worse.

Incorrect. It’s shown through flashbacks and dialog she was being forgotten FAR before she started using the Memory Stone. She was being ignored since 3rd grade and she only find the Stone after “Friendship Games” 9th grade at least. And she didn’t erase the awkward memories from the start of the episode, showing she wasn’t using it as much as she’s accused of and forgotten even when she didn’t.
 
And she did try to get noticed in the intro, if offscreen. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for, like, half the song.” She was being ignored and forgotten even when she did try to get noticed.
 
We can fault failing to show her trying to get noticed nor the shyness and poor social skills that was supposed to excuse such. But that’s not what this is accusing her of.

I think wallflower wants to improve the quality of her social interactions, but misses the mark because to improve you have to hear criticism of said interactions to improve on them, something she’d never hear if she could just keep erasing memories.
