Interesting tips mate, but I get a feeling that those would help princebluemoon3 more than me since he is the rightful artist.
Why don’t you try auto-leveling it for better contrasts? (Or even manual-leveling)
Just a suggestion.
I do it with krita, but even more simple free software like Xn-view can do it for you.
