Yeah, don’t entertain this muppet any further than this. After getting into a heated back and forth with them, I finally got an answer to what the hell they’re talking about: they’re talking about the idea that when you insert human races into anthro cartoons, you ruin the appeal and appearance of of those characters and damage who they are. Examples such as “Rarity is obviously white because of her posh accent” or “Zecora is obviously black because she’s a zebra” and so on and so forth.
Of course, we know there’s flaws in that argument, because these anthro characters reflect IRL humans, most of us can make those assessments based on characteristics, traits, mannerisms and such that said character exhibits. Of course, the most sensible of us also understand that posh, upper crust characters like Rarity and Octavia aren’t necessarily ‘white’ simple because they talk a certain way, but they definitely reflect the kind of person you would expect out of the UK. Same with Zecora: she’s not necessarily ‘black’ just because she’s a zebra, but when you have her speaking with a strong Swahili accent, her home decorated with tribal heirlooms, and using natural remedies and voodoo, you can definitely assume that she’s from the continent of Africa. Which country out of Africa is anyone’s guess, because there’s 13 countries that speak this language and none of them are South Africa…you can already tell where this leads up to.
Point being is that our OP here who actually posted this, while has noble intentions, is actually asking us to be completely ignorant of the characteristics of a character in order to not connect them to any mere hint of a racial traits to said character in order to not “destroy the soul of that character” as if they were living beings to begin with and doing so makes us racists by default. Well, I got this to say:
Just because one sees it, doesn’t make one racists.
If you’re asking me to simply see a cartoon character as what they are and nothing else outside of that, then the creator outside of said character best do their damnedest to make sure no character reflects that. You don’t really get that out of Ducktails, MLP, Star Wars or other franchises/IPs because those characters are created by humans who happen to have those same reflections on other humans IRL, weather it be intentional or not. But that alone doesn’t make them racists at their core - just ignorant on some things about humans in other regions, cultures, and all else
If you want anthro characters who best reflect what Backgroundpony poorly explains, look no further than Sonic the Hedgehog: he’s a blue hedgehog who just likes to have his thrills, chills and spills, and is a teenager full of spirit and attitude. He has no national traits, he has no accent, he doesn’t reflect any sort of culture (regardless of his creative origins). Same with the rest of the characters in the franchise to some degree - there’s your universal character.
I only came back to post this, since Backgroundpony can’t reflect this so well, because they have a history of presenting bad arguments in this site, so in a sense, I’m doing them a favor. After this and after the choice words I had for them…well, I’m definitely not going to go through this with them again.
XD
I meant human races, but thanks for the shuckle.
Edited
I certainly do see races.
Some are ducks, then I see mice, and owl, a couple of dogs, a bear [maybe two?] and a red wolf (or whatever Don Karnage is supposed to be.
If you watch at this
and see races then you are a racist. Because you promote race stereotypes and racial profiling.
You are as far removed from the idea “There is only one race the human race” as it can be.
Sure throw the “racist” card at everyone that contradicts your ideals.
Go ahead write a Long winded Paragraph why we should accept that racist People get to insert their racism into anthro characters.
Let me guess because they can.
No, I got your point entirely, it was just horribly presented. Sorry if I’m coming off so abrasive, but it seriously makes you sound like some arbiter of how characters should be appreciated and absorbed to the reality that is the human consciousness, all coming from human creation. And I, as a creator myself, frown upon that greatly.
Make all the complaints you want, but people will view their characters as they wish if it helps them get a better understanding of the material at hand. I don’t control that, you don’t control that - nobody does. You can speak of the “soul” of a character all you want, but in a world of infinite possibilities, we have the power to create infinite “souls” of one character. You can’t break apart Infinity from Infinity.
Now sure - the hypersensitivity of humanity in this day and era is grating and gnawing to people like me and (hopefully) you who don’t have to live through a character on superficial traits like skin tone, nationality, or religious background just to make themselves feel complete. We can enjoy then for what they are and more importantly who they are as a person. Everyone else can easy go “fuck off” with their interpretations of who’s black, who’s white, etc.
BUT - and this is important - we must also realize that maybe these people do need that superficial connection simply to function because they actually don’t know who they are, themselves.
Should we really be mad at people for wanting to see some portion of representation in themselves though media, regardless of how we feel about it? Where the hell were we to show them a better version of someone in a hijab or someone speaking Patios (Jamacian tongue) when they needed it? What was our society doing at the time? What was their society doing? So on and so forth…
Again, not our fault they can’t enjoy something for what it is, but it’s not our responsibility to make them do so, either. If people just simply talking about it around you is getting you that upset to make a useless macro post about your feelings on the matter, just as a way to “get it off your chest”, then your “soul” is lacking and ill-prepared to take on a whole lot the world has to throw at you. Maybe try being apathetic towards the matter more often and we wouldn’t be here right now. Stop giving those people so much attention! Hell, I can take the same advice from the moment my thumb reached for that “post” button and just brush past this pic like anything else on this website, but you know why I didn’t?
Because I can.
Why are people suddenly worshipping the Ducktails reboot for…whatever you’re getting upset with?
Because they can.
Why are people getting mad at clearly a bad take on what a Caribbean alien looks, sounds, talk, and acts like when they don’t have to?
Because they can.
This is the gift of cognitive choice that we’ve been blessed and cursed with. Learn to live with it and your days may be peaceful
Now we can either keep this up until I get tired, or you back away and you (maybe) won’t have to worry about another long post like this again - your move.
“ I usualy don’t interpret too much into it. “
Me usually neither but every single week I got someone either complain or praise About the inclusion of some athro character because of “race” in the Ducktales reboot. They are fucking Ducks!, can you just enjoy it!?!
I don´t care if you find Jarjar Binks offensive, he is an Alien race NOT a human.
With Anthropomorphism we get rid of the human-Background to Focus on the Soul. No Need to put it back into.
Just had to get that of my chest.
If characters are designed by an artist to be of a specific ethnicity, then it doesn’t matter what I think.
And I can appreciate them for what they are. If they’re supposed to be from Japan, China, India, the UK, France etc. taht’s fine. If not, also fine. I usualy don’t interpret too much into it.
@Four Tet
Those edits were litteraly the first thing that camoe to mind when Zootopia was mentioned xD
You are missing the Point by a landslide.
Also again so what
![](/images/tagblocked-7b05ae50e1f6b0f784fc7d2200ce2bd8.svg?vsn=d)
your current filter.I guess the fans are responsible for this as well.
So what?
Can you not Judge a character for itself? Do you have to put some “race” behind it? In that case why don´t we just throw out the anthro and animal characters and just throw humans on screen with all the racial stereotypes that are so “beloved” to boot.
If People can´t Judge None human character for who they are. How can we expect them to do so for human (characters)?
Second this. I mean we’re about to get (horror upon horrors) a live-action version of Robin Hood with anthro foxes and all.
Now I remember the original Robin Hood, I wonder what “race” they all were?
@Backgroundpony
And since you mentioned Zootopia being nothing but animals, I guess the movie was tailored the same way all over the world…
…no changes whatsoever to the final film…
…none at all…
…nothing in that movie that was tailored to an audience based on their nationality, ethnicity, or “race” for that matter. Just talking zoo animals being talking zoo animals! =D
But what if anthro and animal characters are drawn in away that gives them apperacne of a certain ethnicity?
Additionally to their voice manners and accents?
@Four Tet
Anthro and animal characters have the Benefit that you have to look for similarity in character not apperance.
And yes I blame the fans for failing the test of emphathy if they have to find something “physical” on a Cartoon character that reminds them of themself.
@Xonxt
I don´t know what Kind of strawman you are trying to build here. But you are of by miles.
Your fanart is Always your fanart. Also you can not race-bend a character that does not have a race.
Edited
You make a good point there.
Don’t blame the audience for making their own interpretations, blame the creator for putting them there.
“Classifying” them to a certain human race helps with that.
