Description
This is a design sheet for Abacus Cinch and Tempest Shadow as they appear in my Equestria Girls fan-fiction series I am working on. It’s still a work in progress, and is written in the style of a television series, with 6 planned seasons of 25 episodes each. You can read more about it by following the links listed at the bottom of the image description. It is recommended to read them in order.
They are both members of a secretive global organization known as the Technological Consortium, or just “The Consortium” or TEC for short, which holds science and technology in the highest regard and has secretly safeguarded Humanity from the supernatural and other threats for centuries.
ABACUS CINCH
PERSONALITY
We’re familiar with her demanding perfectionism, competitiveness and pride from the Friendship Games, as well as her penchant for intimidation and coercion, although in her mind, she’s just doing what she thinks she needs to do in order to perform her job. In my series she will actually be quite effective at encouraging everyone to be the best they can be and to accomplish all that they can, but not always in a way that others will agree with or find honest. In short, she is ruthless, but in her mind, the ends justify the means.
IN THE FAN FICTION
In my fan series, Abacus Cinch is a member of the Technological Consortium, and makes her first appearance at the very end of Season 1 at the end of the season 1 finale. She was the “Regional Director” of the region Canterlot High and Crystal Prep Academy reside in, but when she took the risk of enticing Human Sparkle to unleash the magic she had captured in hopes of showing her superiors they need to take a more aggressive stance on the Equestria problem if she could show them how dangerous the Equestrian powers could be. When Twilight Sparkle transformed into Midnight Sparkle, she realized her plan had backfired and immediately sought to send word to her superiors to send aid in containing Midnight Sparkle. However, by the time she had returned, the problem had resolved itself.
Returning to her base to report to her superiors and explain why she inadvertently created Midnight Sparkle, her prudence was brought into question, and her position was put under review. The only reason she was not stripped of rank outright was because of past service and the fact that it turned out she was right, to an extent, that the Equestrian incursions have the potential to be catastrophically dangerous. She was Temporarily demoted to “Base Commander” and she would for a time only have authority over the Consortium base hidden deep beneath Crystal Prep Academy, which is a recruitment and training platform for the Consortium.
She steps down as the Principle of Crystal Prep Academy on the command of her superiors so she can focus on running Consortium operations from their base beneath Crystal Prep Academy. By the end of Season 2, she will have redeemed herself in the eyes of her superiors, and be given back her Regional Director authority after she aided in the elimination of a serious threat. Throughout the series she will gradually lighten up and begin to act more honourably, though she does contest all throughout that there needs to be someone who is at least a little bit ruthless on the side of “Good”. Her relationship with her Daughter - Sunny Flare, plays a major role in causing Cinch to change her ways, as Sunny Flare will be teaming up with the Rainbooms several times throughout the series, testifying that they’re not the threats her Mother thinks they are.
TEMPEST SHADOW
PERSONALITY
Tempest Shadow is quite a hard-case, she is stoic and disciplined, and quite a bit intimidating. She gives off an air of strength and dignity, and she is very serious most of the time, often appearing cold and emotionless to most, and takes her job very seriously indeed, often emphasizing to her subordinates the importance of their work of protecting the world from the many threats that besiege it, within and without. She is also unwaveringly loyal, and respects anyone with great courage, especially those brave enough to stand up to the many terrible Enemies in the world, as well as those who stand up to her, too, which comes to include the Rainbooms.
She treats those who serve under her well, and sees her Soldiers and Operatives as so much more than just cogs in a machine, and would never overlook their needs if she can help, and certainly would never leave anyone behind unless she was sure they were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good, just as she would be. Lastly, she has a complex code of honour, she will keep her word whenever possible, but she understands that a time may come when the safety of others is more important than her personal code of honour.
IN THE FAN FICTION
Tempest Shadow is a high ranking member of the Technological Consortium, and acts as one of it’s Generals, making her “General Tempest Shadow”. She is in her late thirties and has a great deal of experience, both in combat and as a leader, and in her earlier years as a “Hunter” pursuing supernatural beings and Villains, she suffered a severe injury which cost her one of her eyes. Fortunately, her membership in the Technological Consortium allowed her access to the resources to have a bionic replacement fitted, which is a highly sophisticated device, which not only gives her back her full sight, but is capable of changing it’s colours to the specifications of its user. She prefers to have her bionic eye take on a colourization that makes her stand out, one part due to personal preference, one part for the sake of intimidation.
As a General, she is typically called upon to handle large-scale combat situations, to establish defensive fortifications when needed, or when an occupying force is required to establish order in an area. This all often involves fighting the forces of Villains like Dr. Ahuizotl or incursions of supernatural beings.
She makes her first appearance in Season 3 when a major threat begins to arise involving increasing invasions of Spirits and Elemental Entities from the Spirit and Elemental realms, which the Consortium is having trouble controlling. Eventually it would be brought to everyone’s attention that the invasions are occurring because the barriers between worlds are slowly breaking down, something which started during the events of the Friendship Games when Midnight Sparkle created a dimensional tear when she shot at the Canterlot High Statue which housed the portal to Equestria. This was just the beginning of events that would continue to weaken the barriers separating the Human world from other dimensional realms. Tempest Shadow is instrumental in holding back this threat while other characters work on permanent solutions to mending the barriers between worlds, which will be a main focus of Season 3. In later seasons she will again be needed to lead the defence against other threats.
THE TECHNOLOGICAL CONSORTIUM
The primary recurring antagonists of the series, who have a strong presence in every season. The Technological Consortium, or just “The Consortium” for short, with members often being referred to as “Techs” by those know of it, such as the Rainbooms.
The Consortium is a secret global organization which runs most of what goes on in the world, through controlling and influencing people in key-positions to using their resources to nudge events in one direction or another. They pursue, hunt, and police the mystical and supernatural elements of the world, but they also pursue rogue scientists, AI’s, dangerous technology, super villains and other especially dangerous criminals, as well as safeguarding against natural and unnatural disasters, but magic and the supernatural are what they spent most of their time guarding the world from. Think of the Consortium as a combination of The Men in Black, the SCP Foundation, Cadmus from Justice League Unlimited and the Technocratic Union from Mage: The Ascension.
Being a practitioner of magic or a supernatural being does not mean destruction or imprisonment, but the Consortium will police and regulate any known practitioners of magic and any supernatural beings they are aware of, providing strict regulations and laws they must abide by. Indeed, the Consortium counts magic users and other supernatural beings as members, mainly acting as experts on magic and the supernatural and as special agents. Magic users and supernatural beings who do not wish to take part in Human society are typically relegated to quarantine or “preservation” zones, such as Everfree Forest and other places. Magic users and supernatural beings are free to live their lives as they wish as long as they do not pose a threat, and the Consortium frequently patrols around and through these zones. Many who are relegated to quarantine zones feel understandably oppressed, and the consortium is viewed as an oppressive and menacing force by some.
In the fan-fiction, the Consortium will frequently be at odds with the Rainbooms and the denizens of Equestria, who they see as rogue elements and potential threats. The Consortium has been watching the Rainbooms and their antics for quite some time, and have been assisting them from behind the scenes in hopes that the Equestrian portal problem will resolve itself while taking steps to perform damage control or commit resources to backup plans should the Rainbooms fail. For example, they were prepared to step in during the initial Sunset Shimmer and Midnight Sparkle incidents before those things resolved themselves. Sometimes their assistance was necessary, such as during the Sirens incident, where they sent another of their young operatives, Vinyl Scratch, to free the Rainbooms and provide them with aid against The Dazzlings. What, you think Vinyl Scratch just so happened to show up with a giant transforming speaker-equipped car…?
THE FAN FICTION
I am in the process of writing a road-map and world building for a fan-fiction series based in the Equestria Girls setting. Basically, I am writing it like a television series, averaging at 6 seasons with 25 episodes per season, and written in the style and tone of the actual show. It’s basically what I would do if I was the writer for the actual Equestria Girls series.
