But in seriousness, babies have no personality at all. It’s not until they around 2 to 3 that they have developed enough intelligence to discern a personality and start to truly intake what is happening around them with some logic. For some, their intelligence is enough to start figuring out manipulation. Even with failure, some figure ways around the failure rather than seeing its wrong.
 
In essence, they are naturally “bad” and then through learning by either example or just plain logic, it can be nurtured. People are not born kind, they learn to be kind but that doesn’t mean there aren’t children who have behavior made to learn kindness more easily. In inherent “goodness” to them. The reverse is also true.

I know! If you’re going to make a pony a major threat, at least give her a decent backstory to explain why.

Still annoyed that we have zero explanation for why Cozy Glow, a supposedly ‘normal’ pegasus filly, was just as evil as the ancient evil monsters she teamed up with (who don’t really need an explanation).

Cozy never tried to help her friends. She was a power-hungry madmare who first tried to steal all magic away so she could have power via control, then showed her true colours once she actually had magic powers of her own.

I wouldn’t see Twilight using that excuse. I’d see her saying something like, “She grew up in a harsh world and felt the need to fight back. Haven’t we all had moments when we wanted to get back at everyone for wronging us at some point?”

The CMC weren’t her friends, they were her pawns. She used them. I worry for you if you think the relationship shown between her and the CMC, or her, Tirek, and Chrysalis is friendship.

But that’s something that didn’t happen, and they’d still be trying to murder them either way if that happened, and threatening the world, so they’d still be a threat she cannot tolerate.

Counterargument: those two weren’t actually Cozy Glow’s friends, and canonically, I don’t think Twilight gives the slightest shit if they were or not, considering how horrid they are.

If you’re really going down that sort of path, why not just use whatever brand of mind control instead? You’re pretty much doing the same thing at that point.
