I was honestly expecting him to come back and wreck shop on the Good Guys by himself in Part 1 because the Losers’ Club appeared to be useless, then they jump in to knock him out of the way in the not-cliffhanger and are the Big Bads in Part 2.
They made it so clear he was going to be betrayed and was not going be the final villain
To be honest, I found Grogar to be an incredible dull villain throughout the Season. Cozy, Chrysalis and Tirek were far more interesting bad guys. So I’m actually happy about the twist.
Agreed, but I really liked the rest of it.
If there is any good news, we might see the real Grogar in the comics.
I just noticed Autumn Blaze right after Little Strongheart as well, also her second ever episode, but she just appeared in late Season 8, so…

To me, I like to think they got reformed much later. Like after Twilight’s coronation.
@Flufux
Agreed. I like to see this in the view and context of a JRPG battle, the villains are trying to attack the heroes but the hundreds and hundreds of non-playable party members are doing so much shit at once that all the villains attacks are missing and being blocked.
Edited
And while there’s no way in heck they could use the line I would love to hear some dialogue like “Oh, look. All the scum in one spot. Now we can kill you all right now!”
First of all, in hindsight, I might’ve been a bit (yea, right… just a bit) too rude. Apologizes for that. Glad to see more civilized discussion emerging though.
A fair point. I’m a bit too used to discussing movies where there’s a screenwriter who normally develops both the story and how it’s executed. So indeed, can’t put it on the writers completely.
Yes and not exactly. I’d say it’s more like being swarmed by seaguls I guess. And since person in question is armed with magic which is basically an omni-gun, it just feels silly to see someone being able to take on hard-hitters one moment and then get rather overwhelmed by smaller guys and girls the other. Kinda detracts from experience. Might be just me tho.
Well, yea, that didn’t come out the way I intended it to. My bad, no sugarcoating here. The idea was that something which is happening on the screen is just so off, it starts to cause discomfort and inner (and sometimes outer) questions like “Why?” “How?” “But… but… for crying out loud! If this works now, why didn’t they?..” and etc.
Maybe, I’m just a jaded old fa… ahem, person. But personally, I feel like the initial spark of the show has slowly gone out as the seasons went on. Sure, I’m biased as hell against S06 finale for obvious subjective reasons one can find on my profile pic, and Starlight didn’t land with me as good as she did with others, but there’s something else which is now missing. Not sure what. Maybe I’m just out of sync with the current direction.
True. But they had 8 seasons of experience to learn and see what worked, and what made people sigh and call out Deus Ex. It’s the end of 9 years of what can only be described as a cultural phenomenon, and of course I wanted it to go out gracefully, yet with a bang. You know, to put down a beautiful yet bold final stroke of the story we’ve been enjoying for so long despite the flaws. Something along the lines of “There’s not going to be FIM after this, so let’s make these episodes to be remembered!” A swan song of sorts. Wait, that’s too depressing, but you got the idea. Doesn’t have to be a period, too. It can be an ellipsis just as well.
But the current ending just doesn’t live up to it personally.
Exactly what I was thinking. It’s the one final hurrah. But it’s just… not done well enough IMO. Not this scene in particular, just the whole finale overall. It’s alright while it should be breathtakingly amazing, and not just the visuals but every other aspect. Think of a clever battle (TV-Y) plan, try and weave in some more interesting thoughts and ideas, DON’T go for “subverting expectations” at the expence of everything else like they did with the Grogar twist, etc. In fact, in this very scene, something as simple as showing a couple of good guys getting hit and/or not showing villains being bumbling and helpless fools could go a fair distance to improve the impression given here while maintaining the general idea of friendship and working together AND not harming the perceived threat levels of the big bads.
Oh well. No sense of crying over a spilled milk after all. Still, feels kinda bad to go out on such an average note.
Fair point.
@DSF66
Are all the qualms you have with this scene the fault of the writers exclusively? Maybe the script said that the villains were overwhelmed by the number of attackers and the storyboard artists and animators came up with this?
An animated show like this is a hugely collaborative process (just like how movies are) and there are other people responsible for making the final product what it is beyond just the writers. Hell, sometimes behind the scenes the writers have ideas that are completely shot down by the directors, the other higher-ups, and even by test-audiences.
This I can agree with.
I dunno. This reminds me of a person being swarmed by bees. One bee is weak compared to a person and “easy” to handle. One good smack and it’s dead. But a swarm? Even a person that isn’t allergic can be overwhelmed and hurt by them in attack due to their sheer numbers. Not only that but since they’re moving in all directions, it gets hard to attack them back.
I can agree to this as well.
That’s very rude. How about don’t insult other people’s intelligence just because you disagree with them?
It more had to do with people not taking entertainment aimed at girls seriously. And I honestly think she succeeded with this show as well as allowing for other shows aimed at girls to succeed and be good as well.
I know, right? It’s amazing that the show has lasted this long, has such a huge fanbase of people from all walks of life (all genders, children, teens, and adults), and didn’t resort to treating children (its main target audience) like idiots.
It’s not a dumb saccharinely sweet show that’s so devoid of personality/knowledge that an adult wouldn’t want to watch with their kids (or other younger family members). It’s the opposite. And while I’d argue that some of the later seasons of the show had its fair share of slip-ups, that it’s still a good show.
It’s a show, that while flawed, has lots of good comedy, heart, and lore in it. This show is going to change what people think of My Little Pony from now on and I picture a lot of future adaptions of the series taking inspiration and elements from this one.
Dude. This show isn’t really known for good ways of thwarting villains. Even in the earlier seasons, they pulled some serious plot-armor BS via the power of love or friendship (with or without the aid of a special magical Maguffin) to defeat the baddies.
Like, take Chrysalis’ debut episode as an example of this. Is she and her hive defeated by a good strategy (or even by the main heroes)? No. No they’re not. Shining Armor and Princess Cadance (two characters we were just introduced to and barely got to know at the time) defeated them by just hitting them with a huge beam of love.
…You know. The thing that Changelings consume and makes them more powerful. Chrysalis and her hive were able to just overwhelm Celestia and a bunch of other characters. But then here comes these two just blasting an entire hive of them away like Team Rocket in the Pokemon anime. That ain’t logical.
It’s a scene that is the last hurrah of the series. The show is called Friendship is Magic, right? The show revolves around that as its theme. This scene depicts a whole bunch of friends and allies the main cast has made during the course of the series. All of them uniting together to help defeat a common enemy.
@Flufux
Dude. Cool it.
Yes, because in a heated battle where you’re charged at by a dozen different opponents coming at you from all directions at once with Changelings masquerading as your targets and Yaks making the ground shake, you would totally be able to immediately make the smartest possible battle tactic. Also, just a minute later, the trio easily triumphed over the attackers once they got heir bearings together.
Feels to me like someone’s actively looking for things to complain about rather than trying to enjoy the scene for what it is. I mean, sheesh!
It’s only a 3 parter in the same way season 7 started as a 2 parter.
The last problem will be played on the same day as endings but it’s still a separate episode
“They have us surrounded? Good! Now, we can fire in any direction!”
Damn, this scene is just painfully stupid to watch. Chrysalis forgot about wings. Tirek forgot about any sort of explosive beam. Both of them are apparently plain incapable of basic AOE attacks just for the sake of the scene. This just reeks of the same type of writing as The Last Jedi and GoT S08.
Sheesh.
Seems more like a vocal minority to me.
