There was nothing that suggested it was cannon. Spending time together as friends and her liking his singing voice is not evidence they were dating.
And in both universes, the relationships of the characters tend to eclipse. The Cakes are together, Bon Bon and Lyra clearly have something going on together, and obviously the little nod with Cheerilee and Big Mac.
You can date multiple people you know and not end up marrying the first one you date.

There was also that shot in the Equestia Girls music video showing Big Mac and Cheerilee together. Looks as though their human counterparts also dated.
And we are not privy to such breakup. That’s my main point of contention. Frankly, I couldn’t care less if these past relationships ended with bloodshed or casually sitting down and breaking it gently. I’d just like to see some proper closure to it.
