Then what does, pray tell? A battle of wills? If that’s the case, Rarity’s was simply stronger. That’s plenty remarkable.

In an outright fight, they’re probably pretty tough. However, an attempt at physical coercion would not have changed much, since they’d probably just mess it up anyway. The point was that they were outwitted, not outmuscled.

Simple; many ponies would have been too intimidated to keep a cool enough head to measure the situation. Dumb or not, the diamond dogs were threatening, and the circumstances seemingly dire. She handled herself quite well.
