How about a background pony spin-off? It’d be pandering, sure, but in a way that doesn’t detract from Mulp: Phim proper.

Also, I don’t mind pandering/fanservice, as long as it isn’t plot integral. Like K_A said, a background-pony-only episode would be a bad idea, as it would be plot-integral pandering

I mean the comic is much closer to real “fan pandering,” and I love it. That’s the nice thing about the comic; it can get away with that sort of thing because the audience is exclusive.
 
I mostly like the “pandering” done so far (with Fluttershy my own personal exception) because it’s actually added to the experience and made well-needed continuity nods. If the much-needed Scootaloo ep was done in response to fans, then I say panda on. My only caveats about “pandering” are (1) it could cause in-fights with those who do not like the associated fanon or jokes and (2) it could render this fanbase too egotistical and ultimately self-devouring. Honestly, the idea of a background-pony-only episode scares me a bit.
 
I think a lot of the truly “pandering” stuff will be confined to the comic, where it generally works best because the audience is more exclusive and decidedly more “hardcore.” It’s even billed more or less as being drawn by fans for fans.
 
I wish our lexicon for this was better. I’ve called them “brony nods” in the past. “Pandering” is too harsh since it usually does not stick out like a sore thumb, and “fan service” has sexual connotations. But the possible culling of Derpy for being ableist/pandering is very disappointing to me because she was fun to see.
 
And I really, really, really, really, really hope these “debates” do not affect the writers. I would be disheartened if it interfered with their creativity or their openness with the community.
