On this general topic, I feel the need to mention that, strictly speaking, the concept of necromancy focusing specifically around raising the dead is a bit of a modern development. Originally – meaning in medieval times the renaissance – “necromancy” was understood more as a form of magic centered on gaining knowledge from the spirits of the dead. This is reflected in the etymology of the word itself, which comes from nekrós (“death”) and manteía (“divination, magical learning”) – i.e., “gaining knowledge from death”.
 
This later expanded to the magic necromancers were imagined to have gained in this manner, and as a result the term “necromancy” came to encompass more or less everything that is usually defined as “black magic” today. Necromancers in older stories and fairytales do very little in the way of raising undead, but a lot in the way of more general evil magic and witchcraft. By that definition, Grogar and even Sombra could be considered necromancers without too much stretching of the term.

I know I kind of harp on this point every time its brought up but I have to stress this, as I feel a lot of people who have not watched G1 MLP think this is canon, Grogar is not and never was a Necromancer in Return of Tambelon. It’s not stated in the episode nor is it even implied at any point. The Necromancer thing is either, as far as I can tell, old G1 Fanon; Or it is made up whole cloth on a site called the Villains Wiki.
 
Could they make him a Necromancer in G4? Sure but I don’t see why they would nor do I see any evidence they are going to so the only place I can think of for this to come from is that lie on Villains Wiki.
