“…she would ask why I cared about labels so much. It went on like that until one day…”
Radiant Jewel could hardly keep up with Firefly’s long legs. She was getting incredibly tired from all the walking around town they were doing, not to mention how much she was talking. “My love! Wait for me! It’s been a long day and I’ve been trying to talk to you!”
Firefly turned around and gave her signature sultry grin. “Hey babe. What’s cookin’?”
Jewel blushed deeply as that beautiful smile came into view. By Luna, was Firefly gorgeous..no wonder she wasn’t the only contender for the marefriend postion. That’s what she was, right? “What..are we? We’re in public together and we..you know. But when I call myself your marefriend, you get all touchy. Like earlier, when we saw your friend Blossom Delight and I introduced myself to her as your lover. You got all touchy and she looked…irritated. Is there something I should know?”
“C’mon babe, you’re taking it way too seriously,” Firefly laughed carefreely. “It’s just a label. What’s so important about labels?”
“It shows that you’re willing to commit to me Firefly! I want to have a future with you, settle down together. I love you!” Jewel smiled softly, tilting her head in hopes of Firefly getting the hint. “We’re not getting any younger, you know.”
“I love ya too babe, I just don’t see why we have to be so serious about it. We don’t need labels and stuff to know that we’re together. You gotta live a little more, chill out about the formalities!”
“Why do you get upset when I use the labels then? If they matter so little? You always get this…look on your face, as if there’s a bad taste in your mouth. Especially when I do it in front of other ponies I’ve never met before. Are you…seeing other mares?”
“Why not? You’re still my main girl. We’re still young, we can mix it up a little. Doesn’t mean I love ya any less. You gotta come join me and Bedlam sometime. And Blossom. And-“
“Bedlam AND Blossom?” Jewel interrupted in shock. “When did you think it would be appropriate to tell me? Please don’t let me stop you; tell me all the mares whose crotches you found more important than…than my heart.” Tears threatened to form behind her eyes. “No, you’re right. We are still young. I have my whole life ahead of me and I refuse to spend it with sompony who lies to me and infantiles my feelings. We’re over, Firefly.”
“Wait…what?” Firefly’s carefree demeanor fell quickly and grew more panicked. “No, wait! I still love you! I can make it up to you! I’ll…”
But Jewel didn’t hear any more as she turned around and galloped away in tears. If her lover was going to shy away from commitment, she would have no part of it. As much as it broke her heart…
