It is almost as if Twilight and Spike lived in the Library or something, and Twilight likes to see others read, so she would not act like she is doing somepony an favor by letting them borrow an book.

In our own world, public libraries were not always a common institution. It wasn’t until after the advent of the printing press that people started pushing for public access to education and reading materials.
 
Also, there’s a whole living space in the upper part of the tree that is entirely a personal space.
 
Also also: How she treats Spike is unacceptable you say? With such a criticism I’d expect at least one example.

Have we ever SEEN anypony checking books out of the Ponyville Library? The only time books leave that place is when she personally hands them out.
 
I don’t think it’s an ACTUAL library, just called such.
