The vast majority of peryton pictures are an original winged deer species that predated this book by years. The peryton tag still implies deer and original species. The original species tag applies to species that aren’t in the show, even if they are already similar to a “real” mythological creature.
If there actually were any pictures of perytons in this book’s style, we could tag them “classical peryton” or something similar along the same lines as “classical unicorn” and “classical hippogriff”

They were tagged that because at the time, they didn’t appear in the series proper. Any fictional creature, even ones that did exist already, would get tagged as “original species” because they didn’t appear in the series yet. I think some popular species used in the fanbase automatically got tagged as “original species” because of this. It’s an odd rule but that’s probably why it happened.
I wonder if it did too.

Less “like” a shadow and more “is a shadow”. It’s a plot point in the last half of the book that the thing can be kept at bay with a strong source of light.
Cheezedoodle seems to have read it. Maybe it didn’t come out in your country yet?

No. That’s just it’s actual shadow. I guess they did that for the cover to make him appear more mysterious. The book gave a description of what it looked like. If you want a gist of what it looks like, read Cheezedoodle’s spoilered reply.

It doesn’t go into very much detail. It’s described as a mythical guardian. It’s described to make chiming, ringing sounds as it moves. It doesn’t speak, but understands and reacts to other characters speaking.

It has hooves, as described above, presumably on its forelegs, but “taloned hind legs” as described later. That implies to me that its back half is birdlike, so it should have birdlike tailfeathers. As for size, I don’t think it’s terribly enormous. Perhaps more like Celestia or Troubleshoes. The filly characters are the ones who describe it, so to them it’s huge.||

Can you please give us a description of what the Peryton looks like? Or a picture of it if the book has a picture of it? If not here, I wouldn’t mind if you PMed me.
I only ask because I have a Peryton OC and I have no idea what to make him look like since I’ve seen so many varied Peryton designs. And they tend to boil down to these different design choices:
