You know considering Rarity has an annoying voice and she looks like the type of mare that uses waaaay to much perfume, I think this is what most people look like when they find out she’s coming over.

According to Zecora, if phoenix feathers can cause deafness, that means those feathers are laced with ototoxins (chemicals that cause hearing loss)

Based on scince, those feathers may had evolved to produce natural antibiotics against infection (or obtained from antibiotic fungi/plants chewed up by the phoenix), which in turn also act as ototoxins against predators that came into contact with them (e.g. gentamycin, tobramycin, streptomycin)

On the other hand, it could be the flammable fuels secreted onto the feathers, whose emitted vapors that led to deafness to those in contact with the feathers (e.g. toluene, carbon disulfide, jet fuel compounds)”:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ototoxicity#Ototoxicants_in_the_environment_and_workplace
