I’d be fine if they made Spike being a teenager, but not as a little kid.  
If it were up to me having to choose for him to be a dog or a kid, I’d pick dog in a heart beat.

If the writers had made him human (which they should’ve) then hopefully they would’ve made him a young teenager since that’s what he is in the show. He’s a little older than the CMC so that would’ve been 100% perfect.
 
I can imagine the conversation among some of the writers.
 
“Hey let’s take this awesome character with a great personality then physically demean him in the movie by making him a dog for no good reason!”  
“But he’s an intelligent and loving character. He should be among the others and transformed into human.”  
“Nah, dog it is.”

On a positive note, it reinforces one thing…there may be two of each of the Mane 6, but there is only one real Spike. The Spike in the human world is just a simple dog.

I would have found it more degrading if they made him a kid instead, at least as a dog he still gets to be carried by ALL the girls everywhere with them (including the girl’s bathroom) and gets to sleep with them in the same bed, so what’s not to love?

Sonata isn’t even a real human, so I don’t see a problem with it since Spike isn’t really a dog either.
