Background Pony #6D90
There was even one point in the episode proper wherein the dark tree-like structures commonly associated with Aku started showing up. There’s no damned way the parallels are a coincidence.

It would’ve been better if I’d just gone with Samurai Applejack, but oh well.

My guess is that Nickelodeon initially wanted Korra to be a miniseries of 10 min (which I never understood, considering the success of the previous series) so the writers had to cram everything they could but then Nick had to change their minds very far in the production. It didn’t help that Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were the only writers, having to deal with the whole story and not getting at least one or two other writers that worked in the previous show.

That’s what makes it sad.Yeah,he was alright for the first few episodes but the rest was…ugh…I blame Michael and Bryan for the writing.
