IIRC, the whole “Duck and cover!” thing wasn’t nearly as stupid as it seems from today’s perspective. In the early fifties, when bombers were the main delivery mechanism for nukes, and the nuclear arsenals of both US and Soviet Union were smaller and cruder, a nuclear war would by necessity have been a fairly limited one, and not the wholesale Armageddon it turned into later on, with tens. Thus “duck and cover” would reduce your exposure to the initial radiation and protect you from the pressure wave and all the flying debris it would carry with it.

Having never experienced the Fallout universe, I immediately associated balefire here with balefire from the Wheel of Time. AFAIK, balefire was part of that universe before the term was used in the Fallout universe.

Not sure what my point is. Just sayin’.

Our Equestrian way of life! Isn’t it grand?

Peace! Freedom! And pinecones and oats!

Seems perfect…but what if it’s not?

Ponies, your future might not be as secure as you think.

Where will you be when the Balefire Bombs fall?
Spindizzy

There won’t really be a balefire war – right?

Wrong. After years of studying the political and military instabilites of our planet, Stable-Tec analysists have concluded that the odds of worldwide balefire armageddon this decade are 17,443,762… to 1.

Now the good news! The world may be destined to die, but you don’t have to. By reserving space now in one of our Canterlot-area stables, you and your family can survive the initial megaspell exchange, and any post-apocalyptic horrors that are sure to follow.

So imagine life in a Stable-Tec stable. Not just a future. A brighter future… underground!

“If this were actual balefire, the family you see in this picture would be most likely dead. Or zombies damned to walk Equestria for all eternity. Depends.”
