Red envelopes is the envelope that people would put some money in it and give them to other people for congratulations.  
During Chinese New year, adult would give red envelopes to children as 壓歲錢(literally, “the money used to suppress or put down the evil spirit”). The adults would also give red envelopes to their parents too. I sometimes think this tradition is not only for filial piety for thanking the parents raising them into adulthood, but also to tell their parents if they’re doing well in financial state.”
