Jack reached for the sash around his waist and produced a small necklace. A pendant: a single piece of silver, curved into a heart that coiled down into a drop of blood. “Do you know what this means?” Jack asked.
 
“It’s… just an old badge,” Beetle said. Where had Jack gotten it? “It doesn’t mean anything.
 
“Yet,” Jack said. “But it will. I want it to. If you could run, Beetle, to leave your Queen behind and have a better life… would you?”
 
 
In his younger years, Nightingale spent some time away from Luna’s service. During that time he found his way to Czer No Nog, the long abandoned kingdom from which the Changeling’s originated. At least, it was believed to be abandoned. It was on that night that Nightingale became Jack of Clubs, Beetle became King of Hearts, an old badge became The Motuvore, and The Long River began to flow. Beetle became its first passenger; the first Changeling smuggled into Equestria.
