No ones asking people to stop posting pokeponies or any other crossover. No one says stop making r63 ponies. I HATE yuri, sonic crossovers, and FlutterMac with a passion, you don’t see me telling people to stop posting it. Why is when people tell others what not to post it’s always targeted at fandom that are commonly treated badly? I have a strong feeling that this has to do with the fact that the fandom is seen as “bad” more than it is you not really knowing anything about Homestuck or getting any of the jokes. You’re acting no better than an anti-brony. Let people post what ever the fuck they want and if you don’t like it, IGNORE IT!
First and foremost it’s funny. If you do not enjoy the humor the comic just isn’t for you. A lot of people say it’s about the plot and shit, and while that stuff is nice and gives context it isn’t actually necessary to ‘get’ everything to understand it.
It’s more accessible than people give it credit for, at least in my opinion. And no matter what anyone tells you you can’t read it ‘wrong’. You could skip some parts, and I believe it would be about as shitty as if you skipped a harry potter book or two, but it ain’t the end of the world if you do.
Plotwise I think it’s basically a story that grows in scope as it goes along. It starts out in the micro and then slowly grows to the macro as things start happening faster and faster, and really cool concepts like death being made of memories, or a new take on the genesis story, or just plain ‘what if video game stuff was real’ are all taken subverted, played straight, the whole nine yards.
Characterwise it is very easy to find at least one character you can empathize with since the cast is pretty diverse and even the minor characters are at least partially developed. Most get at least some chance to shine and be cool.
On a meta level if you join the fandom you can see the comic change real-time as hussie does take ideas and stuff from his fans, on tumblr, the forums, etc. It’s kind of cool to be able to look at an effect you had on the comic you like in real-time.
Now Homestuck isn’t for everyone. At all. And serial reading tends to have people get disillusioned with it. But you shouldn’t judge something purely based on it’s fandom or what you have heard about it. A work should not only be able to stand on it’s own but it also should appeal directly to you, the viewer. If it doesn’t accept that and let it go I guess.
Anyway, it might help if you read a liveblog at the same time you are going through the first few acts so here is a good one http://treestuck.tumblr.com/tagged/liveblog/chrono
and here is a video that does a pretty good job of selling homestuck as deeper than I probably have.

And here is something Hussie wrote about Homestuck in relation to the Kickstarter. Not my favorite, but whatever. http://mspaintadventures.com/scraps2/homestuckKS.html
That’s my piece
for anyone still filtering Transformers they should probably check this out first >>63850
Well, their fandom may or may not implode a little, a ton of it seems to be trying to second-guess the author and raving for the next update. Maybe it will center around Skaia.net instead after the initial drop. But the pony boards are all pretty gigantic and uncentralised, each with their own little fanons for unexplained show things, each doing their own styles of writing and art, and there’s not a lot of interaction, so if one dies that doesn’t mean all others will die. So long as new art is posted (or glossed over old art is found) you’ll keep getting derpy/EqD artpile updates. You’ll keep getting fangames. (while HS wants one done by an actual company instead.) Yuo’ll keep getting new and original music (the one place HS can compare). And the CMC VAs are young enough i can see them discovering then falling into the actual fandom proper, which will probably jumpstart fan animations/content involving them, if they can still do the voices by then anyway.
Really, it’s closer to Touhou. Just replace “I like her…hat!” with “I like her…mane!” The time between seasons in mlp is treated like the time between games so far, with fans getting fed up with the wait, and making their own crap/starting their own projects.
Probably has a good year and a half post-end at least for new content to keep surfacing, as projects and fancomics wrap up.
Pfft.
When it ends, then we get an entire full-blown adventure game out of it. Kickstarter, yo.
@Niggoslav An apt comparison with the Goblins thing. Maybe that’s why I also find Goblins to be a great comic. They both actually do something somewhat new (nothing new under the sun, etc.) with their genres and have some of my favorite characters. (Biscuit, nooooo)
The one thing that I do look forward to is the fan reaction when HS ends. Its the same with our fandom, I wonder how people are going to act when its done.
I think it would be received better if Hussie would have had them ‘grow out’ of the 1337 speak and the quirks got confined to more specific things. Say, the way Gamzee’s speech changed. That is, for better or worse he ‘grew up’ into an asshole once he kicked the habit. Everyone else could have had habits they need to kick to ‘grow up’ too. It’s too enamored with ‘youth culture’ i guess you could say, to really gain an audience outside of it. Really though, the universe destroying stuff is far less complicated.
The annoying catgirl ships everyone with everyone else. The actual relationship chart looks even worse though, when you get right down to it.
That’s where he loses a bunch of people. The relations and tl;dr chatlogs completely break the experience for all but the most dedicated of fans.
Using the Who comparison, imagine if you only watched 25 minutes of each episode, and the rest was TEXT ONLY. This is what it feels like to me when the chatlogs come up.
Also overall the comic is just not a pleasant style to look at. Problem Sleuth is much more accessible despite both being stick-y MSpaint.
oh, here’s a good one I just thought up. It’s kind of like comparing Goblins to Order of the Stick and YAFGC . Goblins starts goofy like the other two but then it throws away much of the humour, and forces the fans to kind of ‘close ranks’ against the lighter D&D-based fantasy webcomics. That’s kind of similar to what I saw happen there back around…chapter 3 I think. Then I just kinda gave up on it after it became like one of those mindbendy ‘magical’ DC/Marvel comic series but with 1337 instead.
2005- to now wouldn’t be so hard. I was heavily against Doctor Who a while back, but it took my brother actually describing what the series was like and not spewing THERSALOTOCONTENT at me. Fans keep going back to the idea that there oh so much shit that there is no way to describe it. At some point I may give it a shot, as much as I ate crow with the Doctor I just hope I don’t waste my time on a comic that’s just meem 31337 speak gamer hipster bullshit that’s only still around because no one took South parks orders to burn down all Hot Topics.
The best I got for you is its a webcomic that transcends the genre, and is loosely a story about a group of internet friends that get dragged into a reality-warping game that creates and destroys universes and that this description doesn’t even scratch the surface.
On a side note, I notice that Takashi.0 is the one uploading a lot of HS. May I ask you Takashi your opinion on HS and why anyone should read it? If you don’t have time for a long drawn out explanation I understand.
I have come up with a somewhat good descriptor, but, it fails because it requires other-comic pre-knowledge. It starts off like an adventure game parody, but then it turns into a Dr. Strange/Celestials comic written in netslang with really bad fashion. That’s the closest i can come to selling anyone on it, really. But it’s better than what any HS fan has told me about it.
yea i feel that way about homosuck too. I just signed up on skaianet just to look at the prty troll girls NOT wearing hoodies doing prty troll things.
Man, what is wrong with that dude anyway. Who makes someone’s ultimate form be a frikkin’ gay HOODIE. That is like the epitome of hipsterdom. I just look up and save any vriska/aradia pics without. Or if I see one I dump it straight there then delete it.
For those asking what Homestuck is, just watch all and I do mean all of the old MLP shit. Once you get through all the garbage it gets good. I for one am not willing to wade through a bunch of sub par art and story to get to whats worth wile. Massive content dose not equal good content. Im blocking transformers and Homestuck as we speak. I herped and derped and forgot to.
Bitch please.
I’m irritated.
You haven’t seen me when I’m MAD.
Runs off to do a search.
