Nightingale smiled, then, the first full smile that Silver had seen on him. It was coloured by a sort of wistfulness, though, and he tapped his chest. “We know our kind,” he said. “You’re a girl after my own heart. Hopefully it means better things for you than it did for me. I envy you, I think.”
“Me?” Silver asked, dumbfounded. “What do I have the be jealous of? You get to go all over the world, and see lots of cool things.”
“Yes, and get lots of cool scars,” Nightingale added. His smile turned wry as Silver winced. “Still,” he continued, “I believe the expression is, it is always greener on the other side? It has always been my fondest dream to grow fat and lazy, and I have grown to detest violence. Yet, circumstances…” He shrugged, and looked away. “I don’t regret the life I live, but I cannot help but imagine another, sometimes.”
