Even if he has trouble reading, he probably still is. The only other person on the farm who could logically be intelligent enough to manage things is Applejack, seeing as Bloom is a child and Smith is senile. If he can’t read, I doubt Applejack can either.

Accidents can happen. Working out in the field one day, a large tree branch fell and hit Big Macintosh on the head. The concussion left him with amnesia. He can still remember faces and names but he has to relearn how to read and write.
