Thousands of years ago, outside of Equestria, there was an entire race of draconeqi. Leading this race was Gaia, the “mother” of her subjects and bringer of peace to the land. She used her powers to keep the land habitable for the draconeqi, no matter how harsh and unforgiving it got. Other draconeqi had special powers to contribute to their society, such as powers of fertility, wisdom, and love, but Gaia was indeed the one who stood above all.  
Erebus, a dark and mysterious draconequus, was an outcast from society. He was feared by many for his dark powers. However, Gaia, as a wise and benevolent ruler, loved all of her subjects equally, including Erebus. Whenever she had a break from her duties, she would check up on him and spend some time with him. She saw something special in him shrouded beneath the darkness and mystery.  
Eventually, Gaia’s friendship with Erebus grew into a romance. However, she had previously taken a vow never to love or else there would be dire consequences. Of course, she didn’t listen. She and Erebus got married and had a son. Their son was born with mismatched limbs and strange powers, causing him to be even more of an outcast than Erebus had been.  
One day, Gaia and Erebus took their young son to a prophet to inquire about what this all meant for the draconeqi as a race. They were told that their son was a curse bestowed upon Gaia for breaking her sacred vow, and a prophecy was made that would change the future of their race. Their son’s powers would only grow, to the point that he would become a chaotic tyrant. The only thing that would be able to reform him was the love of a gentle and kind soul.  
Gaia and Erebus were horrified by this prophecy, and they tried everything to prevent the fall of their son. They tried to teach him how to keep his powers under control, all the while searching for the gentle soul from the prophecy. As he grew, however, his powers grew stronger and more uncontrollable until they took over his mind. The other draconeqi dubbed him Discord, the lord of chaos.  
One day, Discord left his homeland to find other places to wreak havoc. That’s when he found Equestria, a budding kingdom full of ponies. He immediately took the land over and shrouded it in a state of chaos and unrest. Equestria’s rightful rulers, two alicorn sisters named Celestia and Luna, searched everywhere for ways to defeat Discord. That’s when they found the Elements of Harmony, highly magical artifacts capable of restoring peace and love to the land. They used the Elements to turn Discord into stone and save the ponies.  
When word traveled back to Gaia and Erebus about their son’s demise, they were devastated and furious. Angry with fate, they pinned the blame on the ponies and declared war. The war was long and arduous, but the ponies prevailed with the power of love and harmony. The draconeqi saw their downfall, and soon Discord was the only one left technically alive.  
Since that day, the legend of the draconeqi’s downfall has been passed down through generations of ponies. It is known as the story of how one broken vow caused the demise of an entire race…
