Pencil leads were never actually made of lead. The term probably descends from roman styli that were made of lead, but which were used to make marks in clay or wax tablets, possibly because of solid graphite’s resemblance to the metal.

A pencil was originally a small calligrapher’s paint brush used for writing with lead-based paints. Calligraphers would lick the brush tip to keep the bristles together and would be poisoned by that. Later graphite-lead pencils as we understand them were sometimes coated in lead paint, which could cause some lead poisoning, but the pencil lead itself never contained any lead and wasn’t poisonous.
