Like you said, the interspecies thing doesn’t matter in Equestria. They’re all magical, fantastic non-human creatures, and they’re both sapient beings. In the human world, it simply doesn’t have to be touched upon as more than heart eyes from Spike. I’m pretty there has to be stories out there where a guy gets transformed into a talking animal for a while, and I’m sure that doesn’t make his partner immediately break up everything with him (instead of just waiting until he’s back to normal) because it’d be creepy otherwise. Spike is attracted to either Rarity because they’re both Rarity. But it doesn’t mean it has to be treated as an actual couple in the human world if it happens in the Equestrian one. Things are different in each. The age thing is a real issue though. Even though *Spike isn’t supposed to be much younger than the Mane6 (he was hatched when they were very young fillies), fact remains that he’s called a baby dragon, which means that at least by his species standards, he’s still an infant. This poses interesting questions though: How long does dragons remain infants? Is his mental and emotional growth rate compared to other dragons affected by him living with ponies? Since dragons can apparently nap for 100 years, I can’t help but imagine a situation where a thousand years later Spike is still in his infant stage…yet at the rate his mind has developed since the time he was born, he’d be probably be sagely wise and mature after all that time. Can’t imagine how irritating it must be to be over 1000 years old and still be considered a kid because your body takes so long to develop. The “White Knight” tendencies part I don’t understand. Apart from his species and age, Spike’s usual behaviour with her seems to fit Rarity’s ideal image of the stallion of her dreams. How you need to be like to be in a “working relationship” isn’t set in stone. It varies with each person, and this is a magical unicorn who yearns to find her prince and be treated as a storybook princess. Pretty sure its not means to be 100% accurate to reality.
