I don’t think of them as gullible as people in cult are in a sense looking for something. Even Party Favor said that they were “missing something in their lives”. So it seems more like they were looking for acceptance in the wrong place.

I feel it important to note for contrariness’s sake that she wasn’t a criminal until the Mane Six showed up; the implication was pretty strong that the villagers had come to her to get cultured rather than her trolling for converts. That they later regretted their decision is more of a cautionary tale about gullibility than a criminal act.

And Twilight should have faced a stiff penalty for brainwashing all of Ponyville and nearly causing a town-wide riot in Lesson Zero. Rainbow Dash should be facing jail time for sabotaging the Weather Factory in Tanks for the Memories. Trixie should have faced punishment for the use of dark magic in Magic Duel. Sunset Shimmer should have faced expulsion and jail time for turning all of Canterlot High into a brainwashed zombie army. Let’s face it, there are plenty of characters in the show that should have faced consequences and didn’t, because that’s not in the spirit of the show. It’s called Friendship is Magic, not Law and Order: Equestrian Edition. The whole show’s ethos is about how love, friendship and forgiveness conquers all. Treating someone as a fugitive and launching a manhunt for them doesn’t mold too well with that message.

She’s a criminal. She should be reported for public safety. End of story. Anything else is irresponsible.

But Starlight had pretty much been defeated by the end of the episode. All the residents of Equal Town had their cutie marks back, the Staff of Sameness was exposed as a useless piece of wood, the cutie mark vault was smashed, Starlight’s philosophy was exposed for the bullshit it was, and you could pretty much guarantee that the townsponies would put up a fight if she tried pulling any kind of stunt on them again. Short of actually showing Starlight waving a white flag at the end, it couldn’t be more obvious that Starlight had at least been defeated in Equal Town. As far as Twilight and co. were concerned, Starlight no longer posed a threat to them or Equal Town, so there was no need to pursue the matter any further.

We don’t know what they did after they got back. Maybe they did and Starlight is just that good. Or maybe she as people on the inside keeping her hidden we just don’t know until we get more info.

Problem with that is they extended that olive branch after defeating them. Glimmer’s still unrepentant and out on the loose.
 
They froze Discord into stone, and look at how hesitant they were about him in “Keep Calm and Flutter On.”
 
There’s forgiveness, and then there’s being safe about someone who’s posing a current threat to yourselves and others, or at the very least to the rights (like not being imprisoned) of yourselves and others.

Well, the Mane Six have always leaned more towards forgiveness than punishment. If they were willing to extend an olive branch towards Sunset Shimmer and Discord, I don’t think showing mercy to Starlight is a huge leap of logic.

This actually bothers me somewhat, in hindsight.

In keeping with tradition, Fluttershy has to deal with her self, just as in Filli Vanilli and Hurricane Fluttershy and Putting your Hoof Down and Green is Not Your Color. IMO

Actually, my headcanon is that the mane six will be helped by ponies they had altercations with in the past. I’m thinking that Rarity will have another encounter with Suri, and Applejack will have to deal with the Flimm Flamm Brothers. The big enigma is Fluttershy. Iron Will isn’t an antagonist and Discord is chaotic neutral at worst at this point (not to mention that ordinarily he’d be far deadlier than any other threat).

Yeah, considering the show’s tendency to forget antagonists after a while (which has begun to be remedied recently thankfully), they most likely didn’t feel obligated to give chase and hunt Starlight down. I bet they basically thought “if she runs far enough away, she probably won’t come back.”

Starlight Glimmer certainly does not have that excuse.
