To be honest, I believe that as well, but I’m not bothered if the government decides on a different definition for legal purposes. And there are legal rights and assumptions recognized for married couples that non-married couples may find difficult or impossible to secure for themselves; while there could be other legal remedies to this imbalance, granting the legal institution of marriage to gay couples is the easiest, quickest way to address it, and regardless of my own conflicted feelings towards homosexual behavior, I feel gays should not be denied rights that others enjoy.

I’m a little late to the party, but congratulations to all our friends in America who have struggled through this adversity.  
Now if only Australia could follow suit… sadly it seems improbable with Tony Abbott still as our PM.

Adult role models of both genders are important for kids, yes. But they don’t have to be parents – grandparents, aunts and uncles, family friends, neighbors, teachers, cousins, families of friends, etc. all can fulfill those roles. It’s something to keep in mind, but IMO not a valid argument against same-sex marriage.

Good point. Not necessarily true, but good point nonetheless.
 
Also, homosexuals need additional parental guidance (which can be provided by their heterosexual friends if society isn’t saturated by hatred) due to said point. Love doesn’t take different brains, but raising your child with perspective on both sides, male and female, does. Gender makes people do things in considerably differing ways, and you need both to be whole. And it’s easier to learn the other side in heterosexual union - on both sides, so marriage like you define it can easily result in two whole humans even before childbirth.

I wish I could jokingly reply about fighting over which way to go, but the sad thing is so many people really would be willing to commit violence just because they don’t think others are on the right path, though I think it’s so ridiculous I almost joked about it without even realizing that some people seriously would.

This is a really pretty picture. Very sweet, and rendered in a style that gives it a timeless feel, like one of the older photos in a family album that still gets brought out and looked at frequently.

Heh, well, from what I’ve seen, I’d tell ya east is the way to go, and any other direction is a wrong way because east is the best way. But I also understand that you’ve really got no reason to believe me other than my word, so I can’t really blame anyone for choosing to go whichever way they believe to be best.

Simply put, I believe marriage and family are sacred institutions ordained of God, with a specific purpose, and that each gender has something unique, difficult to pin down, but precious to it, and that both are required in order for a marriage, and a family, to function as the eternal unit they’re meant to; for the entirety of this life, and for eternity beyond it.

Thanks. I had a good feeling about it. Most people with religious objections tend to demonize homosexuals, which I think I articulated isn’t at all how I feel about it. And given my specific religious beliefs, I do believe that those who travel west will always have the chance to come east, later, they’re merely making it a longer trip, overall. But, what can I do? I guess putting it in that metaphorical perspective really helps me feel better about feeling happy for them, though. I may believe they’re going away from the east, but at least they’re having lots of fun going west.
 
Heh, if anyone wants to take a long walk up one of those big hills I’d be glad to show them the roses along the way and the city they’ll get to glimpse. I invited plenty of people to come along back when I was a missionary, but very few are the people who are interested.

I have a question for you. Why do you oppose homosexuality specifically? As far as I believe, homosexuality is half a fluke of biology, half a propagation-limiting mechanism for controlling the population of a species - displays of domination notwithstanding. Why assign some special quality to it, by inclusion or by exclusion?

Had a gay pony dream today about Braeburn and Donut Joe. First one I have ever had. Wish I could remember the lyrics to the great song they sung, but oh well.  
But now that I see this on the same day, kinda feels like I was picking up a bit of the future there. This is certainly worth celebrating, but it’s also so wierd to think that it took until 2015 for this to happen. With America being the center of the world, we need them to be a good example, so I am very glad they’re finally taking those steps.

I kinda doubt a vehement, active hater of gays would be NOT wanting to rain on gay’s parade. They’re just getting swiftly expunged off the site and you mostly see neutrals and passive haters, which are significantly less full of bile.

Hmmm. I think I’ve finally found a good way to articulate it.
 
I’ve been journeying a long time, on this windy road through the mountains. On my own path I’ve taken, from time to time to the East I’ve seen a distant city, gleaming with gold and ivory towers. It’s there I’m headed. I’ve heard it’s a utopia - and from what glimpses I’ve seen of it, and the people from there I’ve met, I believe it. That’s when I arrive at a fork in the road, like many I’ve seen before.
 
I see a path to the east, muddy, rocky and hard, but with its share of roses along the way. I believe at the end of this path, is the city I seek to the east.
 
But there’s also a path to the west. “Utopia” this path promises, with its sign. I personally haven’t seen any such city to the west. Time to time, I’ve seen a nice city, and met nice people from there - but nothing like the place to the East.
 
That’s when I see a large caravan, partying and laughing and celebrating. A man throws confetti from their wagon and their entire party is singing. I ask them what’s going on, and they answer; “We’re finally off to the city in the west!”
 
I simply nod, and let them on their way. I’ve tried telling other travelers before, about the city to the East, but they never believe me, because they hadn’t seen it as I had, but I couldn’t really blame them, either; I would not believe the city to the East, myself, had I not seen it on my own journeys. I just assume the path they took didn’t lead them to see it as I had.
 
So what am I to do to that partying caravan? Tell them “No!, go instead to the east!” to a place they’ve never seen, when they’re so thrilled to go west?
 
That would do nothing but interrupt their party and cause them to get angry at me for doing so, and pointing them down a muddy, rocky path that they believe leads nowhere.
 
So, I just silently go on my way to the East, on the path that I know leads to the far greater city, and hope they find as much happiness as they can to the west.
 
That’s how I feel about this whole thing, when I’m religiously inclined to oppose homosexuality, and head East, and everyone else is set on heading West.
 
I’ve seen the city to the East, but I can’t show it to you from here, you have to walk the right paths for a long time to see it, especially to see it well. There are some mountains in-between here and there, so you have to climb so big hills to even glimpse the city. But I’ve been up those hills, and I’ve seen it, so although I have little hope of convincing anyone else it’s there, I know it’s there.
