Yeah, but you’d basically need to be as experienced as, again, Tara and John. Nowaking negotiating that? Unless it turned out her dad is a regular in Forbes: not happening.

Everyone knows Nowack makes the best Vinyl Scratch voice. They simply aknowledge that by making her her speak (Though hiring Nowack for a few lines would have been amazing).

Guys Vinyl can talk, she has the voice of a god. We mortals are not yet ready to hear thou voice because Hasbro is worried it might blow the minds of those who cannot handle pure awesomeness

I honestly really don’t like the not-talking-Vinyl thing and am hoping it doesn’t really take off in the fandom. Though I figured from watching the episode and it was backed up by the interview thing that Hasbro ordered she not talk due to being the most marketed of the background ponies.

I’m personally a big fan of the idea of having another character with a disability. I like the idea that music is how she makes herself heard.
 
I hope it’s not out of line to ask about something so personal, but… well, I want to say “what’s it like,” but that’s not much of a question (logically, you do everything anyone does in a day but with more sign language.)
 
But I tried, really stared at this window for a long time, but still can’t think of a better way to ask. So… what’s it like? Also, what caused it? And were you born mute or could you talk before?
 
As for the Nowacking thing, unless someone can produce a link to where someone actually said “There’s this fanvid-maker who did a really awesome portrayal of her, and we loved her so much that we decided if we couldn’t have her, then no one else would do!” then that idea really doesn’t hold much water. (If someone can, then link, please.) Let’s not forget that it was EQG 2 and accompanying shorts that first showed her in a much bigger but silent role. Also, voice actors have little bearing on print material, but instead of being her loud fanvid self with less F-bombs, it’s where the hardest evidence for her truly not being able to speak lies - EQG Vinyl texts people next to her rather than talking; main universe Vinyl gets her intent across by gestures alone (as she would later do in Ep. 100 with Tavi) in a UK comic story where her screentime (well, page time) is nearly equal to the mane six and her headphones were not on the whole time. And in nothing does anyone act like she has spoken or usually can (compare her to Big Mac, who says something other than “Eeyup” or “Nnope” just often enough for flavor, or Link from The Legend of Zelda, who everyone responds to as if he’s said things even when we don’t get a dialog box, or Morn from Star Trek DS9, with the “major chatterbox when offscreen” joke. We know what “can talk but the camera never quite manages to catch it happening” looks like.)
 
But out-of-universe, it seems pretty clear that she doesn’t talk because around this time last year at the latest, someone decided she shouldn’t. Someone high up enough that it crosses different forms of media produced in different countries. Whether that’s good or not is up to each of us to decide for ourselves.
 
As for me, I hope that allowing some material to show her using alternatives to speech means that the powers that be who made that decision intend (or are at least comfortable with the idea) that she is mute rather than making it a gag.

It’s a consistent theme that apologists for her extraordinary negative portrayal tend to either act like all the problems with it were “really” about some tiny insignificant thing, or to dismiss them categorically as “social justice war words” or the like.

I’m fine with DJ not talking. It would’ve seemed overkill if they gave every popular BG pony a voice. Plus the “strong silent type” kinda makes her cooler.

You guys really think Nowacking’s voice would’ve been hard to copy? Before she got so popular I heard much better voices for Vinyl anyway, I am sure she never crossed the minds of DHX or Hasbro as a factor here. You give her too much credit.
 
Making Vinyl mute has been a very deliberate thing. I dunno if this is to compensate for how anti-disabled they came off after Derpygate, but having a mute character is something that makes me incredibly happy. The deaf/mute person that always wears headphones is not a new idea either, but it is a cool one that often surprises you. I really like that they picked her for this!
 
Being mute I am super biased, but we should still be happy that they’ve fleshed out her character a lot more. No offense to the super generic characterisation Vinyl got in the fandom… Oh wait, okay I do intend some offense actually. Because fandom vinyl is incredibly boring. I’m surprised people are complaining at all that we now finally have something to work with… And equally surprised people can’t even tell she’s mute and think that she just had no voice actor. Even if we’re known for making drama over nothing (red eyes), to think that they didn’t give her a voice to avoid drama IN THE SAME EPISODE WHERE DERPY TALKS is just insane! This episode, they held nothing back! Vinyl was not the exception.

Realistically, you either agree to their terms or you don’t work. There are lots of voice actors waiting in the wings for a paycheque.

I’ve always headcanon’d she didn’t talk, with the idea of her being like “Daft Punk” in that regard, where her techno music is how she feels comfortable communicating.

I can’t imagine someone from Hasbro Studios and/or Hasbro Inc. wanted Vinyl mute in RR and beyond, but I can see someone from DHX… If it was McCarthy, that’s fine, but I can imagine some people would wig out… Which I like to watch. :3

In the interview where Larson talks about the writing of the episode, I believe he was originally going to have her talk but Hasbro, for whatever reason, decided that (at least for the foreseeable future) Vinyl will not speak. It’s probably just their idea of part of her character.

Can’t. They’re getting her to voice Littlepip for the MLP movie. Kidding, but yes someone like her would have been good.

If only they could’ve found someone to imitate Nowacking’s voice.
