BTW: In Deviantart, the artist updated the picture so that there’s a line inbetween the ponies, since it caused so much confusion that they’re not quote-on-quote “fused together”.

I do believe that’s meant to be a type of stylism. they fade out near the bottom too. It’s hard to describe, but I’m sure it was intentional. The main focus here is their faces (and the scarf) the rest of it is just meant to compliment the main part of the piece.
