I was actually thinking they just tagged along once Twilight figured out something wasn’t right. (Cadance, in particular, wouldn’t exactly be somepony Twi could just blow off, for several reasons.) She met them at the party, but (with the obvious exceptions of Spike and Cadance), they probably would need to bond during the quest like the normal universe Mane 6 did.
 
But mainly, I guess I just don’t think “everyone’s dead” is particularly interesting.

I suppose she could have made friends at that party,though remember she also had a party in her tree house with all of ponyville including the rest of the bearers and all she did was drink and try to sleep through it. Though I suppose she might have more in common with a party of her fellow students which could lead to more interaction thought I doubt she’d take them to ponyville.

Or she could have simply gotten a late start on defeating Nightmare Moon, and had friends she met at Moondancer’s party insist on accompanying her, rather than the ones she would have met in Ponyville. And thus is the world saved… By a very different group of heroes.

Yeah, going to Moondancer’s party wouldn’t have changed anything….Well, maybe something. Perhaps a pony or two would be interested in helping Twilight or coming to Ponyville for the Celebration. She’s Celestia’s prized pupil after all. So we’d get a couple more recurring characters. Delve a bit deeper, perhaps a different bearer. If Sunset could have been a bearer, Lyra and Moondancer {Both unicorn mares of Canterlot} could be bearers too. {Same with some others.}

It’s most likely. I dismissed this previously until that 100th episode preview aired, and seeing that organizer pony brought up this scenario to being plausible again. But it’s all just speculation as fans do with popular works of fiction.

Celestia’s orders to go to Ponyville were made regardless of whether or not Twilight went to the party.  
Twilight could have gone to the party, then gotten the order to plan the junk in junkville.

In historiography, this is known as counterfactual history, and to quote Red Cedar: Thus began a thousand years of darkness…

Where actually taking a chance on friendship from the very beginning would have potentially doomed us all.

But wouldn’t Celestia have sent her to ponyville anyway to organize the festival? So she would have met her friends anyway even if she hadn’t sent the letter?
