They did develop names, especially the ones the fans or crew latched onto, and who consequently got used a lot. And I believe you’re right about Stoneface, I’d heard that one for her too. But that was later, after they were used. Originally, they were all “Background (kind of pony) #(number)” based on the original character sketches by Nicole Gauss. Lyra for instance was Background Unicorn #2 (Word of Nayuki; Gauss) well past the time where her toy was misnamed Heartstrings, and Trixie’s toy was misnamed Lulamoon. At least as recently as July of 2013, some of the crew had still never heard the name Lyra (eyewitness account, Everfree NW). But with Derpy’s fan popularity, they’d long since started calling Derpy Derpy, even before Lyragate.
