Detailed syntax guide

Background Pony #D2FA
Well season 3 will be out soon. Here’s hoping that spike will be more active.
Background Pony #D2FA
I know what you mean. For what they did, they got off the hook too easily. But I think that they made up for it in the secret of my excess and Dragon Quest. Give the mane 6 credit, they at least threw spike a birthday party and got him presents (even rainbow dash, even if it was probably something from her gym with a bow slapped on it). And Dragon Quest the 3 girls went on spike’s quest to see if he was safe. So at least they improve a bit.

You’re right about both of those things. It doesn’t help that Amy Keaton Rogers wrote 3 episodes in season 2 that didn’t have spike. And no other writers thought to put him in. Half the time, I think that they forget that he’s even in the show. And the other half, they just use him as the butt of jokes. But maybe one of these days, someone will nail a spike episode. Make it god, and help develop him. We can’t lose hope.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I get the point of that episode, but for all the reasons you said, it didn’t work. If anything it made it seem like Spike needs a traditional family badly, and Twilight and co. didn’t apologies nearly enough for the crap they pulled in that episode.

Spike can’t catch a break. The other characters don’t treat him right, and the writers won’t give him a good episode.
Background Pony #D2FA
Well I guess either way, it would work. Twilight would still make friends and save the world.

Well, I think that the writers were trying to convey an nontraditional family for spike. Showing that you don’t need a mom and dad, but the execution is clumsy, and downplayed too much. They come off as insecure in the owl episode (the owl managed to gain more popularity in a day with them, than spike during his stay in ponyville). But they do show that they appreciate what he does, and that despite how they acted no one can replace them. And at least twilight apologized for being insensitive. And I don’t think a super villain. He’s too nice to do that. I think he’d run away after yelling at them for all they’ve done, with them apologizing and treating him better.

But forcing her was exactly what Celestia did with Ponyville, and of that hadn’t worked out, Nightmare Moon would have indirectly killed everyone.

And the Mane Six are nice (well, except for Rainbow Dash) but they’re not what Spike needs. It’s a happy relationship, but it isn’t healthy. Just look at Owl’s Well That Ends Well. Not only to they completely ignore Spike for a bird, he ends up completely losing it for a while. The kid is a super villain waiting to happen!
Background Pony #D2FA
I believe that anyone that tried to socialize with twilight, was shut out by twilight. Celestia knew this, and so had spike take on the role, by saying he’d be her assistant. When really, his role would really be keeping an eye on twilight. And besides it wouldn’t look good if she forced twilight to make friends.

I don’t know why. I think it was either one of those details the writers forgot, or like I said before:twilight may have been more active in his life than they let on. They may change the story just for that reason.

Nah, I don’t think Celestia would give twilight spike, and not tell her about his greediness. And honestly, I’m starting to think that not even Celestia knows where his egg came from. I mean, she had it for the exam, but I think she might have been given it for that reason.

well according to the show, the mane 6 are a nice family. Maybe the writers will make it more apparent next season…

But why Spike specifically? Was there nobody else who could have been Twilight’s friend, someone who has parents? We see ponies willing to invite Twilight to a party in the first episode, why couldn’t Celestia force her to hang out with them and call it Friendship Magic just like she did Ponyville? It would basically be the same situation, just on a smaller scale, and no eternal night if Twilight turns out to be less social then Celestia thought.

And now that you mention it, why wouldn’t Celestia give him a present or now about his origins? Either she knows about both his origins and greed growth and didn’t tell him or Twilight, which would be a serious dick move, or she dosen’t know either (where the hell did the egg come from then?) and simply didn’t give him any gifts because.

Sigh…. Spike really needs a nice family.
Background Pony #D2FA
Well I actually think that spike keeps twilight in check. He tends to be the sane man when she gets paranoid, and tries to bring her back into reality. And even though she may not always show her appreciation, he knows that she needs help, and is dedicated to her.

And again, Celestia took on the liberty of raising a dragon BECAUSE no pony knows much about dragons, let alone see a baby one. So of course she wouldn’t know about his greed-growth either. And like I said, Lauren said the writers may change the back-story (maybe make it less unfortunate). I mean, even Dragon quest, spike asks twilight if she knows about his origins. He never asked Celestia (and don’t pull the “he may have offscreen” because it would’ve been a major plot point, and they would’ve shown it, or even mention it. And do you notice that even in the secret of my excess, spike admits that not even Celestia gave him a gift for his birthday. It means that both twilight was a little more active in his early life than their letting on, or celestia was more absent.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Yeah, Celestia is really pushing they be together, but don’t you feel like she’s prioritizing Twilight over Spike? Twilight needed some kind of friend to keep her from going totally off the deep end, and Celestia probably can’t be a full time single mother, being a monarch and all that, but there wasn’t anyone else who could be Twilight’s assistant? I feel like she sacrificed Spike’s chance at a nurturing home for Twilight to have one friend she dosen’t really appreciate and can’t provide the proper kind of psychological care for, that we also know nothing about biologically.

I must admit, when “Secret of My Excess” revealed not even Celestia, who has lived for thousands of years, knows anything about dragons and still sent a child one to live with crazy bag Twilight, that was when I began to lose confidence in her.
Background Pony #D2FA
Yeah I know what you mean, and I agree. I think that there would have made a great team. Especially since she was actually the only one that took interest in trying to know him, unlike the others who only talked to twilight.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But it seems like Celestia is set on having them be together, and it doesn’t seem like he really minds. Besides, I think “royal canterlot business” may be code for “come home and visit your mother” for both spike and Celestia. So they may still keep in touch, at least.

I’m actually very disappointed the Fluttershy-Spike ANGLE (not a ship, an ANGLE) never went anywhere. She’s the most motherly of the cast, and Spike needs that.

But yeah, Twilight’s his sister, but you can’t leave a child with only his sister and her friends. He needs a mother, and I just don’t think Twilight is qualified, despite how much the two love each other.
Background Pony #D2FA
Thank you! You’re one of the only few people that I’ve met, that knows that spike isn’t a slave. But yeah, I have to agree with you there. The mane 6 aren’t the best with kids. Though apparently Lauren said that their maturity levels always vary from 12-20. I tend to think that’s why they’re not good with kids.

Yeah, she does care, though I don’t think she’s really trying to be like his mother. He sees her and the other girls like sisters (Cathy Weseluck said so in an interview) and that’s all he expects from them. And I agree about their flaws. But I think that the writers tend to overlook the details of how they interact with kids.

And as for fluttershy, she’s ironically one of the few who’s seen the least with spike. I thought that after seeing her smitten by his cuteness, that they’d be a duo. But nope… And as for Celestia, I dunno. I think at this point spike only sees the others as his family. At least they didn’t give him up.

In fact…how come fluttershy wasn’t the one who hatched him?! I think it would have been interesting. A pony, afraid of dragons, finds a dragons egg, and hatches it. Taking care of the baby as if he was her own.
Trickquestion
The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I will be one of the first to say Spike’s situation isn’t as bad as a lot of people make it up to be. He isn’t a slave, and I don’t think anyone on the show thinks he’s a slave. He’s a child, and the ponies around him recognize that he’s a child. The problem is, the Mane Six are some of the LAST ponies you’d want to leave children with. And don’t you pull the Baby Cakes card on me, we have yet to see how an entire childhood surrounded by Pinkie Pie influences them in their adult years. Is still wouldn’t leave her with my children, and believe they only got out okay due to cartoon logic.

I’m not saying Twilight dosen’t love him. I think she does. The problem is, she still barely understands friendship, and has very little in the ways of mothering skills. And that’s what Spike needs. He needs a mother. And to be kept away from the other Mane Six bar Fluttershy. Applejack is not a good influence (Applebloom), Pinkie Pie would spoil him rotten to the point that he’d never mature, Rarity needs to either love him back or stop leading him on, and Rainbow Dash is just a jerk. Really, only Fluttershy is mother-material, and she deals mostly with animals. For his own sake, he needs to go back to Celestia.
Background Pony #D2FA
Actually, it seems that he and twilight at least kept in touch during those years. In the secret of my excess he says that for every birthday he had, she always got him one present:a book.

Also Lauren said that the whole “Celestia” thing was a concept never officially added to the show, so the writers may change it. Hopefully make it less… like you said. I agree, despite spike and twilight possibly knowing each other, Celestia was like his mom. To do that seems wrong, but apparently she did it because she felt they both were meant to be together. So I hope they fix the idea a bit.

But deep down, they all do care about him. They must, if he sees them as his only family.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Why is Spike even in his situation? According to Faust, after he was hatched Celestia raised him through his baby years, then gave him to Twilight as an assistant when he reached the stage we see him in now. I’m sorry, but just because someone can walk and talk dosen’t mean they don’t need their mother anymore. He’s still growing and learning, and she just kicks him out of his home in Canterlot to stay with Twilight, who, prior to episode 1, was a total bitch! Celestia knew Twilight was reclusive, anti-social and impolite, that’s why she sent her to Ponyville, and she just leaves the small child with her? There was no guarantee her assignment would have made her a better pony, and if things hadn’t unfolded as they did, she probably would have gotten worse. My point is, Spike is stil a child, and deserves a safe, nurturing environment to grow up in, which is most certainly not some backwater filled with crazy ponies, monsters, and Rainbow Dash.
Background Pony #D2FA
@Trickquestion ha I agree about both of those episodes. I think she needed to be taken down a bit.

Yeah, slapstick would be fun with pinkie, rather than hit spike around like he’s a football player’s wife. The poor guy does work for no pay, and considers them all family. And how do they repay him? By constantly hitting him. Though season 2 got better by toning it down, and actually made him be treated a little more like a member of the group, despite being in less episodes.

@BP

I will say, Season 2 has actually been good to me in that regard. She was tortured by a lack of cider in SSCS6000, and, even though a lot of people hated it, I loved Mare Do Well for the metric tons of abuse it heaped on Rainbow. A pity it didn’t stick.

Pinkie Pie though, she is the perfect comic relief pony. Do you really think she’d even notice an anvil falling on her head? If they’d target her more often, we could have all the physical gags we’d need, and they wouldn’t be hitting the small child with more issues then many adults!
Background Pony #D2FA
@Trickquestion I have to agree. Rainbow Dash isn’t the nicest pony. And yet she has hardly had anything bad happen to her, as karma. She says something mean and no one gives her a dirty look, or hits her.

I think some people feel bad for spike too. But others don’t pay attention to him because he isn’t a cute pony. It’s upsetting, since he’s just as good, or even better than the ponies on the show.

How come we can’t have Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie get hurt regularly? I’d rather have them get thrown through the ringer then Spike, little guy’s got enough on his plate as it is. I mean, people would throw a fit if any of the stuff that happens to him hit the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
Background Pony #D2FA
@Trickquestion personally I never found that physical humor funny, even when he was a small cute dragon.
