people will pick the easier one EVERY time

What you have to understand about English is that it’s not really a language. It’s a collection of all the bits we liked from German, French, and some Latin and Greek, all stolen wherever we felt like and then tossed into the mouth of a city-dwelling hustler to be chewed up, spit out, and re-arranged as his listeners please. And we never, ever, forget a word we picked up once, so we have an enormous collection of words and phrases that say the same things in slightly different ways.

Letters, on the other hand, can take a flying leap. Diacritics? Don’t need ’em. Little variations like ç and å and é and è and ê? And God forbid we ever need ø or ñ. Except in borrowed words. Piñatas? Yay!

Nothing beats French Canadian swearing. English swears are all sexual and body-related; French is all biblical.
 
To this day, a guy in a corner store calls me “Mr. Tabarnak”, completely oblivious to that words meaning, because he overheard me mutter it when I spilled coffee.
