The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Ayn Rand was once interviewed on television; she was asked if she would ever vote for a woman president. She said no (she hated feminism, you see, and thought that women should find a strong man to marry).

The interviewer then asked ‘what if this woman candidate was clearly the best qualified for the job?’

After a long pause, Rand said: ‘well, if we’ve sunk that far, then I suppose I would.’

All I have to say is,
you want to be the man, fine, go with it. Nothing wrong with it.
You want to be an objectiveist, fine, do that.
But hey, don’t be a dick about it.
In fact, do as you do, be who you are, live as you live. But for fucks sake, don’t be a dick.

@Von

Not to mention she would justify her own affairs yet suffer a complete break down when she was treated similarly.

(I also love how the Randroid singles out me, the person who expressed the most nuanced and sympathetic views of Rand in this thread, for the attack. I guess that’s what I get for being all serious on the Internet)

@BP Oh I have a very good idea of why she adopted her political stance, and I don’t blame her for it. I am a Russian and have no love for the commies, so I totally understand where she’s coming from in that part. My labelling her as an “atrocious human being” has little to do with her philosophy, but more with how she interacted with others. In many cases she viewed her personal preferences as absolute truth, and for someone whose philosophy placed so much value in individuality, she didn’t strike me as someone who respects the personal choices of others. That was basically the source of her opposition to homosexuality, as well as her views of the arts (look up the one-act play “Mozart was a Red” - from what I hear, the parody of Rand in that play isn’t that exaggerated).

I can’t believe I’m discussing this here, of all places.

Regardless of why Rand came to the conclusions that she did it’s not a stretch to say the conclusions themselves were childish, unrealistic, and cruel.

Forget her fiction, which was generally mediocre. Her essays made her points much more succinctly and with much greater clarity.

Remember, Rand lived through and witnessed first-hand some of the worst atrocities mankind could inflict, all carried out in the name of socialism by perverse autocrats. Her politics were informed by her early experiences in the russian revolution, when many hundreds of thousands died because they were the wrong sort of socialist, never mind what happened to those labelled as bourgeois. She was lucky to be merely purged from university for not toeing the political line. Others just disappeared.

Disagree with her politics and her social theory if you like. Don’t stoop to labelling her when you obviously don’t understand why she adopted her political stance. Labels serve as a convenient way to dismiss another’s position without bothering to understand it. Would you accept the label of paedophile thrown at MLP fans by unthinking morons on TV? I doubt it. So why resort to the same tactics against someone who’s politics you don’t like?

@Lurks-no-More Personally I think Rand was an occasionally insightful thinker, a piss-poor writer and an atrocious human being. Make of that what you will.

Actually, now I do kinda suspect that it’s a parody account, what with the conflation of conservatives and Rand, the scream of “I AM THE MAN” and the misspelling of Pinkie Pie. At least, I do hope it’s a parody..

I haven’t been able to take conservatives seriously ever since Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment… also generally being AGAINST freedom too. :V

Oh, where to begin…
“An expose on the liberal agenda slowly eroding the freedom in the My Little Pony universe.”
Maybe afterwards, you can write an expose on how members of the Horde who disapprove of Garrosh’s policies are a bunch of Gilneas-first Alliance lovers who ignore the fact that the goblins run the world bank.

He has 1986 in his username. 1986! I mean, I guess that could be the year he was born in, but 1986!

“I AM THE MAN IN THE RELATIONSHIP!”
He said while looking exactly like a young woman I happen to know. Also, if you have to say it, you probably won’t be the man. Just some advice.

nyxabuse: “…MLP emphasis on friendship is pretty antithetical to her philosophy”

Not necessarily. Ayn Rand had nothing against friendship per se - if another person’s well-being makes you happy, then it is in your rational self-interest to spend time with them and help them in various ways. What she objected to is the subjugation of one’s own needs and desires to the needs and desires of others, and the ideologies that insist that there is an inherent virtue in self-denial and self-sacrifice. [Disclaimer: I’m not a Randian, since I have some major disagreements with her, and she apparently didn’t allow any deviations from her thought]

But otherwise, this guy does strike me as hillarious, and his attempts to view everything through the prism of his politics are very immature. Not to mention the fact that he identifies as both Randian and conservative. Rand didn’t have much love for conservatives and their traditional values either.

If Bioshock has taught me anything, and it has, it’s that Atlas Shrugged is not childish at all. However, just looking at how he wears his fedora, this guy’s a pretentious prick with no sense of class. I mean, seriously, does he want to get his ass handed to him on a silver platter by a five-year-old?
