Well for all we know it may have well been canon, as far as S02E11 - Hearth’s Warming Eve goes…. Though this was more based in Pony Myths then any real hard History. But, then they said the same thing about Nightmare Moon too…

They can always go back to the old method; using 10 Unicorns to move the sun and moon long before Celestia and Luna came to existence.
 
To be honest, I’m not sure if that was a real backstory or fanon material.

Pretty sure stopping the sun in place just means one side of the planet freezes whilst the other roasts. Y’know, assuming Dear Leader isn’t brutally deposed within the nest month or so.

So if Celestia no longer has her special talents, then doesn’t that mean the sun will never rise again? Which if you think about it is going to kill all the vegetation, which is going to kill the animals and ponies which is going to kill all the predators, not to mention without the suns heat Equestria will eventually become a frozen wasteland.
