The only reason I don’t agree with ‘artist’ is due to how the tag functions. The word is fine. The only reason it would need replacing in my suggested model is due to the existence of a current artist tag that would need to remain intact, though unused.
You couldn’t just ditch the original tag and replace it with a new one- it would have to be left in place indefinitely or the new system would just become a mess. A new word for the same function would be needed that’s distinct only in that it’s intended to work alongside the new ones.
The Creator tag would be a ‘original artist or majority contributor’ tag, which, as stated earlier, the basic implication of the artist tag in it’s current form. Any other contributors would be tagged by their own contribution to the piece displayed.
collaboration pieces would probably not have a ‘creator’ tag at all, but rather sperated lineartist colourist and animator or whatever as determined by uploader or someone else aware of the dynamic.
To explain in full the way I see it:
Umbrella: ‘Artist:’ Not a tag in itself, but a searchable wildcard that covers ALL artist tags (including the defunct ‘Artist:’ tag).
Tags: Creator, Animator, whatever… these are the taggable terms. each contributor it tagged for their contribution, but each tag is clearly defined in use, rather than being ‘a person who worked on it’.
Wildcards: Each ‘artist’ tag could also be a wildcard that can be either added or removed when searching:
All in all it creates a faily dynamic means of filtering by what a person DID as artist… but at the same time by search Artist: you can just get exactly what you always would have gotten by doing so.
So you want to stop using “artist” because it covers too many creative endeavors… and replace it with a word that covers even more creative endeavors?
I’m sorry, but while I can see the value of having separate “animator”, “editor”, etc. tags, I just can’t support using “creator” for someone who draws a still image.
I’d use ‘Creator’ or the like in cases of one static piece. Something that implies that they are the major producer of the piece. would essentially work as the artist tag does now, but not be inclusive of secondary tag types due to being distinct from the ‘old’ artist tag, which I’d have remain as relic only until replaced by users for the appropriate tags over time.
If you use “artist” as only a sort of meta-tag or umbrella tag, what tag would be used for the artists of drawings like >>826040?
It’s a means of filtering. Way I see it just searching ‘artist:inlucidreverie, animated’ is not quite right- I could be the key artist for a piece, the animator or just the storyboard artist- I don’t personally think the artist tag works adequately due to it’s complate blanketing of every possible avenue.
In a perfect world where I called the shots I’d have the artist tag as a catchall for a variety of different sub-type tags. you wouldn’t actually tag ‘artist’ at all, but rather it would be a wildcard term that returns all variants instead.
There’s really no point in tagging yourself as the animator if you’re already credited as the sole artist. All it does is add clutter.
